In 1835, James Kapp purchased land northwest of Detroit and began to build a large rancho that would become East Lansing. Kapp's holdings extended into today's Lapeer County when he sold his land to Abraham Lincoln for $3 million dollars in 1865. In 1870, Hiram Snyder bought part of Kapp's property and built an agricultural college that became Eastern Michigan University (EMU) with its current name on July 1, 1899. At EMU's founding, only men could attend school; women did not start attending school until 1957. In 1906, Detroit residentsWillie Pemberton and his brother Howland formed the Willkie brothers Brewery Company with intentions to659 produce beer for local consumption rather than sell it world-wide like other breweries had done before them. After some successful experiments at their brewery they decided to establish a Distribution Center outside downtown Detroit so they could have more control over their product and distribution methods while still keeping operations affordable for average citizens living within easy reach by car or streetcar access from downtownDetroit On November 3rd 1907 they opened their Distribution Center off Woodward Avenue just north of I-75W It was later renamed MLK Boulevard after Dr Martin Luther King Jr who came down South around that time Dr King helped get EMU started then helped manage it through many years before he died in 1968 Pemberton retiring from business moved back home to live with his wife Mildred soon after DrKing’s death . Continued operation until discontinued due to lackadaisical attitude by founders about quality control during hey days Today you can still find some remnant sites associated with Willkie Brothers Brewery including: distribution center off Woodward Ave., main building on North State Street between Third Street NW & Fourth Street NW among others

The University of Michigan campus lies within East Lansing proper as well as adjoining villages including Lapeer and Hillsdale. The first permanent settler in what is now East Lansing was John Logan who arrived on a boat from Boston on November 24, 1796. He named his new community "Lansing", after George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon near present-day Albany, New York. In 1824 Jacob Meyers built a mill on Mud Creek north of town to process lumber brought overland by the Erie Canal route from Canada. For many years this mill was the largest employer in town with up to 100 employees working at various times during the day and night; however, it closed its doors in 1906 due to lack of demand for lumber among other businesses around that time. In 1827 David Snyder moved from Wolverine Township (now Price) northwest of present-day East Lansing to establish what would become Snyder's Corners about southeast of town along former Upson Road (now Kalamazoo Road). This land had been claimed by Snyder who named it Prairie du Chien after an early French explorers' expedition through that area back in 1785/86 while exploring American territory west of Lake Superior as part =of his behalf under General Marquette as part =of joint French/American explorations under Louis de la Rochefoucauld de La Salle.). David Snyder also acquired 2 tracts located northeast corner Of West Lafayette Street between Depot Avenue(now Main Street)and Huron Avenue north sideOf Stevenson Boulevard east sideOf Stoughton Avenue about two miles south From current site Of State Capitol building before Indiana Line then border Between Ontario County On Ontario Side And Grand Traverse County On Grand Traverse Side About One Mile Southwest From Park River whereOSU Campus stands today .
