During Michigan's great civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, East Lansing played an important role in supporting black activists and others who sought racial justice through peaceful protests and civil disobedience tactics. In 1969 white supremacist militants killed three people during demonstrations against affirmative action at Eastern Michigan University; although no indictments were ever brought against anyone involved in that incident or any other similar activity across Dearborn County during that time period (such as those carried out by Ku Klux Klan chapters throughout Southeast Michigan), it marked a turning point forEast Lansing community members who saw themselves as allies of marginalized groups within their own municipality. The city's nickname "City onthe Mound" comes from an early 19th century plat map which showed what is now downtown as part of what is today called "The Heights", including parts of what are noweastsideofthesmootch Creek Park and north side of Happy Valley Road (now Gratiot Avenue). The original map also depicted two small towns - one near current day West End and one further west near current day Eastern Market Place - between where Shiawassee Street meets Washington Boulevard and just inside present-day Midtown neighborhood boundaries
