The university was originally called State Normal School; however due to opposition from some residents who saw it as an opportunity for white people to get education away from Black people (the school was segregated until 1957), it reverted back to its original name upon opening: Eastern Michigan University. Eastern MichiganUniversity has since expanded beyond its initial purpose - now including graduate education - with over 120 schools and colleges operating on its property across 11 states and 39 countries around the world! However, recent economic declines have led to decreased enrollment at some of these institutions while also reducing funding for programs such as arts programming. Despite these challenges, local residents continue to support their city by making donations to various charities and volunteerism.
