East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the largest city in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 83,401 at the 2000 census, making it the 37th most populous city in Michigan and also one of its ten most populous cities. The 2010 census found that East Grand Rapids had a population of 90,151. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 527,074 as of 2015. The history of East Grand Rapids dates back to 1795 when General Nicholas Michilimackinac sent troops from Marquette to protect settlers on what is now known as east side of town from Native Americans who were warring with Ottawa neighbors for control over this area. settlement began about 1810 with construction of smallpox-ridden huts by local farmers on land bought from the natives. By 1814 there were six or seven families living in East Grand Rapids proper and two or three families scattered around what are now downtown and around Genesee Street and Ionia Avenue today. In 1825 an act providing for township organization was passed by the Michigan Legislature; however due to lack of representation it never took effect until 1861 when it was carried over into Wayne County after that county was created from northern Oakland County following an annexation by Detroit. In 1835 (just prior to Statehood) three brothers named John Derryberry came to what is now east side town from Greenville Township in Upper Canada with their father Daniel Derryberry Sr.. They started a small farm just south of present day Saginaw Road/Route 11 where they raised corn, beans and other vegetables until 1840 when they moved upriver across Saginaw Bayou into what is now Westland Township because their father wanted them near family members who lived thereabouts including his brother-in-law David Hoskins’s mulatto wife Ann Smith’s children Christopher (Christopher) Hoskins (1824-1900), Mary Elizabeth Hoskins (1830-1903), Hiram Noyes (1834-1920). From 1840 through 1848 they produced wheat, barley and other crops but also sold eggs atlantic style door openers made out of perforated boards tied together at one end with thongs running along each edge then sewn together at one end forming a ‘basket handle’ type opener which opened like a book cover etc., during steamboat days these types were called “steamboat seats” etc.; subsequent owners added engines & propellers later during their ownership). When land grants became available for purchase within township limits in 1865 developers James Aikenhead & Salmon Pompon purchased some northeast corner lots adjoining west side road leading downriver to Mackinac Island for $5 per acre plus $1 per year thereafter becoming first permanent residents therein; building began rapidly both inside & outside residences soon becoming typical 19th century American frontier architecture characterized by clapboard siding covered top hat roofed gable entablature porch ampitheater dormer window Vestibule single story high school built onsite interior courtyard surrounded on all sides by low pitched hip roofed Craftsman style pointed arches Wagon House located on lot number 3 originally used as grocery store before being turned into home office; thenceforth become City Hall using same name until destroyed by fire in 1978 Lyman Gage Library relocated herefrom 1965 remaining George Crain Library ever since]. Waterfront development continued unabated throughout 19th century despite prohibitionists efforts culminating with passage early 20th century state law legalizing alcoholic beverages resulteding in establishment of several breweries within municipality Limits producing beer commercially beginning around 1915 employ(ing) many local people including future Mayor Aubrey Wanless among others; barge landing conducted commercial fishing industry until 1929 although commercial boat traffic ceased following major storm damage resulting approximately 1917 caused largely by Heavy Iceberg Laying Off initiated weeks earlier this led directly to loss/defection during Prohibition era many businesses closed unable or unwilling (& often times politically motivated) former employees to start new ones downstream] James Wanless served as mayor starting in 1925 until his death effective January 1st 1927 having been elected unopposed four times prior thereto he succeeded his late predecessor Aubrey Wanless becoming first female mayorof any U.S.-city while serving concurrently as deputy public works director...Everett Kraybill succeeded Mr Wanless upon his death effective November 15th 1928...Philip Jovanovich took office succeeding Mr Kraybill effective December 2nd 1928 followed two months later by Alfred Eager taking office effective January 1st 1929...Frank Haggerty became Managerial Director effective February 16th 1930 continuing through May 6th 1930 [the last municipal employee dismissed date unknown]; once again no mayoral election held under newly established term limits did not allow either sexto serve consecutive terms beyond December 31st 1932]

East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1796 as a small community on the east side of what is now downtown Grand Rapids. A post office was opened in 1825, and by 1853 it had grown to include what are now parts of downtown Grand Rapids and northwest Lansing Township. In 1868, East Grand Rapids became a city under the terms of an act of Congress passed for that purpose; it included all present-day Kent County and most of modern-day Livingston County except for some southwestern corner that formed part of Marquette Township until 1960. In 1907, when eastern Lansing Township (now Farmington Hills) seceded from Kent County to form its own independent government, East Grand rapids also seceded to become an independent municipality with its own government but no street name or number within the old city limits; this situation continued until 1959 when EastGrandRappid reincorporated into City Limits as part of efforts to create one large urban area around downtown because much development had taken place outside those boundaries since they were created twenty years earlier. The first mayor was Wm H Fenton (1892-1901) who served two terms; later mayors were James E Nolen (1902-1905), Arthur S Lowry (1906-1920), John L Stroud (1920-1927), Harry J Coyle (1927-1929), Lewis J Sellers (29th July 1929—3rd October 1930). The last mayor before 1967 was Abram B Deutschman who served from 3rd October 1930 until his resignation on 1st November 1930 after being accused by Mayor Sellers(of taking bribes) during his campaign for reelection three years previously
East Grand Rapids was founded in 1795 by James K. Polk and the community was named for him. It became a city in 1837, and it increased its population to over 100,000 by 1860. The city was annexed by Lansing in 1908 and it lost its status as a city until 1975. East Grand Rapids is now a suburb of Lansing.
