It is the county seat of Kent County and home to East Grand Rapids Community College. In addition to its large metropolitan area, East Grand Rapids has a smaller rural area as well as smaller villages and hamlets that make up its core community. The community began as an agricultural settlement in 1835 and became known for its brewing industry during the late 19th century. Today, East Grand Rapids is a major commercial center with several leading companies headquartered there including Pegatron International, US Steel Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company and Genworth Financial Corporation. The history of East Grand Rapids begins with three families who arrived from Hungary on horseback in 1835: Szilárdszky János (1807-1872), Papp Mihály (1809-1868) and Balogh Zsolti (1796-1878). They built their first permanent farmstead on what is now First Street in 1836. Over time they developed land around their farmstead until they had a total of six farms totaling over 100 acres (40 hectares). In 1839 they married Anna Kőrösi Csaba (baptized “Anna Kőrösi” on October 12th 1799 – died December 9th 1865) who came from Kolozsvár after she was widowed by her husband László Balogh. Their firstborn son Ferenc was born on January 24th 1840 at the family farmstead just east of today’s Third Street/Moses Avenue intersection where he still lives today as one of our city’s most prominent citizens. Ferenc attended public school from age five until he entered high school when he went to live with his father at the family farmstead for two years before returning home to attend college underprivileged students could attend primarily through correspondence courses offered by private individuals like George Washington Carver or John Marshall Whitehead but not government schools like Fordham or Emory University because these institutions were then considered “elites” while public schools were looked down upon as beneath them due to their low tuition rates which started at $2 per semester when tuition started being raised gradually starting in earnest during the 1880s becoming much more expensive during World War Irorsing steadily rising prices to $25 per semester by 1919). He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1865 after spending eight years trying to get into Yale School of Engineering where he did not meet any requirements but did receive an offer from Vanderbilt University which accepted him however Vanderbilt also required him to complete four years graduate work at Vanderbilt before eligibility would be given for him to teach there hence his decision not onlyto become an engineer but also pursue this career path instead choosing insteadanderving an established university such as Yale). The city of East Grand Rapids was founded in 1836 by the residents of the town of Gratiot. The city was named after General Lewis Cass, who had commanded American forces during the War of 1812. In 1861, East Grand Rapids became a part of Michigan Union and in 1865 it joined the United States as a result of the Organic Act. The city experienced rapid growth following its incorporation and by 1870, it had a population of around 85,000 people. However, during the Panic Of 1893, East Grand Rapids fell into economic decline and saw its population drop below 30,000 people for the first time in history. Despite this negative trend, however, East Grand Ramsips continued to grow through the 20th century and by 2000 had reached an estimated population over 150,000 people.
