Despite this setback, however, East Grand Rapids managed to maintain some degree of prosperity until the early 21st century – although its size has diminished significantly since then (particularly due to suburbanization). Today few people live within walking distance of downtown or any major business districts; instead most residents rely on transportation options such as automobiles or airplanes for work and pleasure outside of their local jurisdictions.[1]
