East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 61,691 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th most populous city in Michigan and the 2nd most populous city in Kent County. It is also one of two cities within the metro Detroit area (the other being Highland Park). The first settlers to what is now East Grand Rapids were Methodists who arrived in 1814. They built churches and schools on what is now Fourth Street and State Road 11. In 1824, General John Young decided to make East Grand Rapids a post office for his new military outpost on land he had purchased from Chief Washakie. The town was named after him as well as for President George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Philadelphia where he raised horses and hounds. The first store opened in 1828 on Third Street between Ottawa Boulevard and Detroit Avenue NW; it became known as "Young's Store" until it closed around 1903 when Eastern Commerce moved into that space. In 1835, James Ewing founded an iron works on present-day Second Street south of Main Street; this company continued until 1870 when it merged with Western Iron Works to form Wayne Iron & Steel Company which remained active until 1984 (). Eastern Commerce began operations at its current location on Main Street in 1897 when Fenton Mills bought the business from Ewing's son-in-law Alexander Graham Bell ().
