A permanent village began to form on the site of what is now downtown East Grand Rapids in 1824 when General Winchester Lewis and his troops halted an Indian attack on the town. The village became known as “Lewis” after General Lewis. In 1827, John D. Rockefeller founded an oil refinery here and named it for himself – Rockefeller City (now Rockefellersburg). The city gradually grew through annexations from other towns until it had a total population of 113,098 in 1930. Growth continued slowly during World War II because many businesses were destroyed or closed due to military service or technology shortages; however, business growth resumed following the war and has continued ever since. During much of its history, East Grand Rapids also experienced significant political upheaval due to its location within one of three major congressional districts: 1) Wayne County (today’s Oakland County), 2) Iron County (today’s Muskegon Heights), or 3) Washtenaw County (today’s Livonia). These district boundaries have changed numerous times over time but have always resulted in some type of political representation for EastGrandRapids residents outside of those areas – most notably during Reconstruction when voting rights were granted to African American citizens living within these boundaries despite efforts by slave-owners to keep them out. Today, although control over local government remains with its constituent municipalities, East Grand Rapids does enjoy some degree of economic stability thanks to its growing automotive industry and especially its proximity toDetroit – giving it a strong sense of community identity which gives rise to strong support for local government policies and services

East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 25,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County. The city was founded on December 31, 1837 by John Stevens and others as the site of what would become Grand Rapids. The first settler in East Grand Rapids was George Stephenson who arrived in 1824. In 1831, the town of East Grand Rapids gained its charter from the state of Michigan and began to grow rapidly; it had a population of only 100 people when it did so. By 1840, there were 1,200 residents in East Grand Rapids and it had established itself as a major commercial center with several stores and homes being built around Market Square. In 1848, East Grand Rapids became part of Washtenaw County after becoming one of four towns chartered within that county by virtue of their location on or near Michigans main east-west highway (the others being Ann Arbor to the north-east and Detroit to the south). At this time, there were only about 2 dozen people living in EastGrandRapids proper while over 20% of all Washtenaw County’s population lived in nearby villages including Saginaw Township (to the west), Fraser Heights (to the north-west), Bigelow Heights (to the south-west) and Haggerty Township (to the east). The growth that took place during these years cannot be overemphasized as it made possible for much important infrastructure development such as sewers and roads that still exist today – such as Main Street which runs alongside I-94 just outside downtown EastGrandRapids. This type of growth also led to significant job creation opportunities for those involved with early capitalism; many businessmen whose businesses grew out of economic activity within these early days would go on eventually tofound larger enterprises such as Ford Motors Company and General Motors Corporation. During this time period too there were large numbersigrant groups moving into what is now southeastern Michigan from various parts across North America; some coming directly from Canada while others making their way through railroads crossing through Ohio or Pennsylvania followed by boat downriver until reaching what is now Eastern Michigan at present day. These movements created social tensions which would surface again during World War II when American soldiers stationed here came into contact with local civilian populations who harbored anti-American sentiments due largely to wartime shortages caused by war materials rationing rather than any inherent hostilities between Allied nations themselves.
