Gun targets have been a part of the landscape in East Grand Rapids for over 125 years. The first target shooters in this area were farmers and their families who used small traps to shoot rabbits, squirrels, or other small prey from a distance. As target shooting spread to local schools and churches, people began using guns to compete with each other. Rifle matches were also held at these locations. As guns became more common, so too did gun targets. Target shooters in today’s society use different types of targets but many of them are based on traditional firearms designs such as pistols and shotguns. The first gun target in East Grand Rapids was a powder-keg on Putnam Avenue. The site is now occupied by the Michigan State Police Headquarters. In 1892, an ammunition dump and rifle range were built at what is now the corner of Huron and Washtenaw Streets. The ranges served as a training ground for then-Michigan Militia members and their instructors. On July 4, 1898, a military parade attracted attention from onlookers when a group of 50 cannons opened fire on six targets located in downtown Grand Rapids. The event marked the opening of the city's first open air artillery range.

East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a small city in the northwestern corner of the United States. It is located on the east side of Lake Huron and has a population of just over 100,000 people as of 2010. The town was first settled by European immigrants in 1824. It became an incorporated municipality in 1895. The city is built around two large lakes – Huron and Grand – and is surrounded by natural woodlands and prairies. The downtown area is home to a number of businesses, including several banks, health care providers, and schools. The city also contains a variety of cultural attractions, such as the East Grand Rapids State University campus and the East Lansing Art Gallery.
The area now known as East Grand Rapids was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The area was part of the 1800 state of Michigan and was annexed by Detroit in 1835. In 1836, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of a military fort at Mecosta River to protect U.S. traders traveling through what is now southeastern Michigan. The fort was named Fort Mackinac after Gen. James K. Polk, who led American forces against Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, when it became clear that America would not win the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order called "An act for organizing and arming a national force to suppress insurrection" which authorized states to establish militias to support Union troops while they were fighting in the war on opposite sides. East Grand Rapids joined 22 other states forming the Union army under General George Armstrong Custer as part of his march across Indiana into Ohio Territory on November 8, 1865. East Grand Rapids continued to be an important center of trade and industry until economic development shifted from manufacturing to services in the 1990s and 2000s. Major industries have since moved away from East Grand Rapids, such as information technology and health care service companies; however, some new businesses have begun emerging in this growing region, such as mixed-use redevelopment projects with commercial floorspace above retail stores or office space below residential units
