East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 61,026 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kent County. The city is located on the east bank of the river Grand River and has a population density of . The area that would eventually become East Grand Rapids was first settled in 1824 by Methodists from Kentucky with assistance from John Davenport. In 1827, land grant to David Goodin was made for his farm now known as Goodin Park. A post office called Goodin was established in 1829 and remained open until 1903. In 1834, Detroit resident andresident James Kapp bought what is now known as Kapp's Landing on the west side of the river for $1,000 cash. From this point forward, it became clear that Kapp had intent on making East Grand Rapids his permanent home. He began purchasing lots south of Superior Street and east of Washtenaw Avenue until he had purchased all present-day downtown including what is now the eastern edge of Middletown Township; then he built a sawmill on Saginaw Creek which produced lumber for use in building roads and bridges throughout Michigan during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1847, when General George Armstrong moved his army into Detroit after its capture from Mexican forces at Buena Vista Ridge, he encampment occurred near what is now Main Street/Kapp's Landing Road within easy walking distance of Kapp's Landing mill complex (now Eastern Market Place).Armstrong directed General Philip Sheridan to bypass Detroit along Valley Road so as not to cross under I-75 just north of downtown Detroit while encircled by Mexican troops - an event later chronicled in Ford’s "Charge across America" movie script. During most of this time there were no schools or churches in town other than Goodin Park Methodist Episcopal Church which served primarily Catholics until 1862 when construction began on Holy Cross Catholic School also serving Protestants (later Roman Catholic) students until 1931 while Drury High School still serves predominantly African American students today through its athletic teams which compete as part of Division IV Western District United States high school athletics association (WUHSAA). Flint automobiles started being imported into market place during early 1920s starting with small Studebaker models conversions available for around $650 ..... However, following World War II many businesses reopened including two steel plants that had been closed during wartime; this led to an increase in jobs throughout the city although some residents still felt they did not get fair share of economic development opportunities like other western Michiganders did. In recent decades downtown redevelopment has become more popular with developers looking for mixed-use projects that include office space along with residential units or commercial properties on top of them within walking distance for employees or customers alike The popularity has spilled out into adjacent neighborhoods where live/work spaces are being leased out or homes sold at below market value to attract investors
