Many heavy industry plants have closed since 2000 or 2005 when global competition made traditional manufacturing uneconomical; however several remaining large companies continue to do business in East Grand rapids: Cummins Engine Company(Cummins), Wernham Hogg Pharmaceuticals Division(Wernham Hogg Pharmaceuticals) and Alcoa Corporation(Alcoa).
