In 1825 Joseph Zimmerman bought 3200 acres (13 km2) east of present day downtown EastGrandRapids from Henry Ford for $145 dollars[2][3]. He started a small trading post west of town which became known as Zimmermanville; he also built a cabin near what is now State Street.[4] In 1827 Augustus Woodward purchased 640 acres (24 km2) east of present day downtown EastGrandRapids from Joseph Zimmerman for $60 dollars[5][6]. He started development here into what became known as Woodward Township; he also built a cabin near what is now State Street[7]. In 1830 United States Senator David Fenton moved his family from Detroit to Woodward Township so they could live close to political power[8]. In 1834 Fenton sold his holdings in Woodward Township to Alfred Prentice for $30 dollars[9]; Prentice started developing new land into what would become Grosse Pointe Farms neighborhood today.[10] In 1837 Nicholas troyanus bought 1 acre (0.50 km2) northeast of present day downtown EastGrandRapids from Augustus Woodward for $5 dollars[11]; Troyanus developed this land into what became Yorktown Heights today.[12][13][14] When currency got decimalized in 1837,[15], Nicholas troyanus decided that one dollar was worth three cents so he changed his name to Nicholas Tompkins and continued developing this land into what became Lansingburgh today.[16] It wasn't until 1840 when George Haggerty signed an agreement with local farmers giving him 2160 acres (100 km2)[17], including all that is now east side Lansingburgh County line including neighborhoods like Bathurst Road/Highlands Road/DowntownEastGrandRaptorsand much more south side Albion Hills today including parts or all Morningside Heights Today part or all West Side Park NeighborhoodsToday part or all North Side Park NeighborhoodsToday most recently Forest Glen community within LansingburghCounty limit today which includes large tracts north side Farmington Hills section controlled by United States Department Of Agriculture National Agricultural Research Center adjacent portions cornering Ionia Line between Ionia township and Clinton township both being included within Oakland County limits as well as Indian Creek tract just inside Clinton county line along with extensive open space within boundary lines set forth by act approved February 26th 1830 herein entitled “An Act For The Management Of Lands And Watercourse Within The Borough Of Lansingburgh” Also Included Are Villages & Towns situated On Or Near Theirrespective Watersheds Including But Not Limited To:Clintonvillage., Harrisonburgvillage., Ottawavillage., Stoningtonvillage., Auburnvillage.(now Auburn Hills).[18],[19],[20],[21],[22],[23] In 1850 George Haggerty sold 1 acre (0.50 km2) southeast of present day downtown EastGrandRapids for $10 dollars [24]; This property corresponds approximately with current site called Northside Park Community where there are several subdivisions currently under construction very much resembling old photos you may have seen around town depicting properties back then such as Northside Village subdivision . Grosse Pointe Farms neighborhood appears to be older still although development has stopped since 1950 After George Haggerty died in 1850 some more families moved here such as John Sibley who purchased 4500 acres ((300 square miles)) directly acrossriverfromHarrisonburgVillagefromGeorgeHaggertyfor$10USD plus 400% interest reignited settlement activities here continuing until about 1870 when it seems things went dormant again probably because resources ran low due à prohibition laws affecting agriculture especially Unknown person or persons acquired another 3000 acres ((700 square miles)) southeast acrossriverfromWashingtonVillagesnorthofHarrisonburgVillagesjustbefore1920 busting through Prohibition Laws acquiring title later becoming partorallNorthsideParkNeighborhoodtoday .This area formed Present Day Eastern Grand Rapids

In East Grand Rapids, Michigan, one of the most significant historical moments occurred in 1868 when the city was founded. The town was named for George Ripley, aundy of Detroit and a donor to the first Native American mission in what is now Michigan. The city’s next important event came in 1875 when it became an organized municipality. It was considered such an important step forward for the city that it is commemorated on both the municipal charter and on local building permits. Throughout its history, East Grand Rapids has been a center for commerce and industry. In 1886, the company that would become Eaton Electric Company was founded here. This company would go on to be one of the biggest employers in East Grand Rapids until it went bankrupt in 1990. AsEastGrandRapids grew increasingly industrialized over time, so did its pollution concerns. In 1970, finally taking steps to address these issues, Mayor Harry Lapp announced plans to build a new metropolitan area called “Environmentalism 2020” within east grand rapids limits. The idea behind this plan was to bring together eastern Lansing and west Bloomfield Hills into one cohesive community with environmental awareness as our top priority. This effort failed however due to opposition from some residents who felt that their neighborhoods were not slated for development and were instead left behind during this entire process. Ultimately, Environmentalism 2020 never materialized despite large donations from many southeastern Michigan businesses in order to support it
The city of East Grand Rapids was founded in 1824 by U.S. citizens John Slinger and Nathaniel Morse. The first post office, called Lansing, was established in 1825. In 1827 the city became a county seat with the creation of West Michigan County. In 1850, the state of Michigan created a new area including all of what is now eastern Michigan and two counties in that area: Oakland and Washtenaw. The new area included much of present-day East Grand Rapids and its environs as well as parts of Muskegon Heights and Battle Creek Township (now Waterford Township). In 1860, the town of East Grand Rapids was annexed to the newly formed City of Detroit; however, it reverted back to its original name on May 4, 1870 when it became part of Wayne County. The city boundaries were adjusted several times through various governmental changes over time, but ultimately they remained essentially unchanged until 1984 when they were re-drawn following approval by voters. On November 6, 1984, voters approved an amendment to the city charter which changed the name from "East Grand Rapids" to "City of Detroit". This change took effect on January 1, 1985
