The history of gun magazines in East Grand Rapids, Michigan began with the founding of the first magazine shop in this city by John A. Sauer in 1892. The business was located at Fourth and Main Streets and served as a distributor for local gun dealers. After World War I, following the enactment of the National Firearms Act (NFA), Sauer opened his second store on Third Street which functioned as a smithy and blacksmithing operation. In 1933, Sauer's son-in-law John Pohlman joined him as president and head of marketing for both stores. In 1934, Sauer sold his interest in the company to Julius Genzel who operated it until 1978 when it was purchased by George Jorgensen. From 1978 until 1984, Jorgensen ran it as an independently owned store before being merged into G&H Magazines Incorporated (G&H) which became one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the United States. G&H is headquartered in East Grand Rapids today and continues to distribute its products throughout Michigan through four stores and online sales. East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Muskegon County. The population was 77,695 at the 2010 census, up from 71,814 in 2000. The city is located on the Muskegon River and has a population density of . The first permanent settlement in what is now East Grand Rapids was made by French traders on the Rouge River in 1796. The area that is now East Grand Rapids was originally part of Washtenaw County. In 1815, it became part of Michiganders Second District as part of the Third Brigade under General Anthony Wayne during the War for Independence. It served as an outpost on American side of Battle Creek until 1816 when it became part of Ottawa County and then back to Michigans Third Brigade again under General Wayne until he resigned in 1817 due to illness at age 43 years old. In 1819, East Grand Rapids became self-governing with John Stracathorne as its first mayor and Cushman Wixom as its first treasurer after being organized as a town via an act passed by the Legislature on December 15th, 1818. On February 6th, 1860, following his election as Mayor over William Ransomemer by a vote of 10 to 5%, Stracathorne inaugurated “The Proper Order” which called for law enforcement within limits set forth by ordinance rather than through elected officials alone responsible for maintaining order between citizens and their government officials; this helped create one core value at Eastern Grand Rapids which still stands today: A sense that one’s government should be fair and impartial despite different backgrounds or opinions among its citizens
