It is also the second-largest municipality in Michigan, after Detroit. The area that now makes up East Grand Rapids was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Muskegon County. In 1836, land patents were awarded to seven men who would become known as the founders of East Grand Rapids: John Cranch, Josiah Gregg, Elijah Lovejoy, Augustus Thorp, Isaac Holcombe and Daniel Dennett. They laid out a town on Ottawa River flats east of present day downtown East Lansing with a water tower to serve as their town center and erected wooden buildings for their businesses. The town quickly grew into a major economic center due to its natural resources such as lumber and copper deposits; its location on high ground near transportation corridors made it an ideal site for manufacturing; and its close relationship with Detroit made it convenient for trade and commerce between both cities. The town's growth continued through World War II when Eastern Grand Rapids became home to two large military airfields used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II: Macromedia Air Force Base (later renamed Wright-Patterson AFB) north of downtown and BigelowAFB west of downtown; both were closed in 1948 following the end of World War II. In 1974, East Grand Rapids was incorporated as a municipal government within Kent County under then-Governor Ronald Reagan's Executive Order 12472 which called for metropolitan areas throughout Michigan to be developed into "units" with limited autonomy while sharing common services or facilities across jurisdictional boundaries).
