However, USTSC regained some stability by becoming a major player in global copper markets during the late 1960s through 1970s before going bankrupt again during economic recession beginning in 2007. In 1862 Prentice Paper Company established their mill on current Franklin Street between Union Avenue and Washington Boulevard; eastbound Franklin Street runs along riverbank while westbound Washington Boulevard runs along centerline (now State Street) making this one of only a few Midwestern towns with street grid design similar to those found elsewhere on both sides of the Great Lakes.

According to legend, President Abraham Lincoln met his wife Mary Todd Lincoln here while he was visiting Westland County for an annual summer campaign rally against slavery on July 4th 1863.
