East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 103,814 at the 2010 census. In 1897, East Lansing merged with Grand Rapids as part of a statewide consolidation plan that also included Flint, Mackinac City, Bay City, Orion Lake Junction, Traverse City and other townships in Michigan's Upper Peninsula region. At its peak in 1920, East Grand Rapids had a population of 120,000; however this number decreased over time because of migration to larger cities and towns outside of Michigan while also experiencing economic decline during World War II due to military activity near the city limits. The population reached 105,,714 by 2000 but has continued to decrease since then due largely to Hispanics moving into central Michigan from Mexico and Central America as well as retirements from manufacturing jobs throughout the Midwest which have depressed joblessness rates around the Great Lakes area overall since 2009 Due to its location on an agricultural Corridor between Greater Detroit and points south where goods were shipped downriver for export/import purposes along with being situated on an important shipping route for cars heading northward out of Detroit via I-94 (the "Municipal Route"), East Grand Rapids experienced significant growth during its early years due primarily to automobiles becoming increasingly popular among American motorists traveling through southern Lower Peninsula states looking for cheap labor rather than driving upstate or eastward through more expensive areas such as Toledo or Ann Arbor where wages would be higher However over time this growth stopped altogether although some new development has occurred such as several shopping malls close to downtown including one located immediately adjacent to United States Ford Motor Company’s now closed Rouge Assembly Plant which employed thousands until its closure in 2006 prior thereto causing many people who used those shops complain about what they saw as “a blight on downtown” There are currently no major plans announced or underway by either Mayor David Stitt or any public officials regarding Downtown revitalization efforts which seems somewhat inexplicable given how much potential exists Additionally there is little community involvement nor does there seem any real desire by anyone involved with Downtown redevelopment efforts whatsoever - seemingly driven more by financial interests rather than anything else aside from generating tourist dollars . Finally when asked about their thoughts on Downtown revitalization efforts he said only “It sounds like we should look into it – but you know our goal is just keep things going like they are right now” This lackadaisical attitude towards Downtown revitalization efforts could be seen across all levels of government hereabouts which could lead ultimately not just locally but also nationally if not adequately addressed - resulting in further erosion of community spirit and engagement leading eventuallyto less strong ties between local government units generally speaking

In 1837, a group of settlers led by Isaac Aspinall purchased 1,200 acres (500 km²) of land on the west side of rapids for $10 per acre (4 kg/m²). They named their new township after George Washington as part of a larger effort to promote American independence and achieve racial diversity among its residents. The township was organized on November 3, 1837 and became part of Washtenaw County on January 1, 1840. The development that took place during the late 19th century within what is now East Grand Rapids were largely fueled by transportation connections made available through two major engineering feats: completion of the Pere Marquette Railroad through town and construction of US-21 along its route. This highway not only linked eastern Michigan with Central Michigans agricultural heartlands but also served as an important artery for goods moving throughout western Canada and Mexico City before ending at Petoskey Bridge across Lake Huron near downtown East Grand Rapids
