East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The first post office opened in East Grand Rapids on November 1, 1827. It was located on Elm Street between High Street and Ionia Avenue; later renamed Ottawa Boulevard. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population over 100 residents due to investment by local merchants in lumber, agriculture, fishing and other businesses. Unfortunately for East Grand Rapids, many entrepreneurs failed to develop useful transportation infrastructure or make profits that would have allowed them to keep up with larger towns like Detroit or Lansing which were emerging as major economic engines within their respective counties. However, through hard work and persistence over time some great things did happen to East Grand Rapids - such as becoming one of only two cities in Michigan without an express train line until 1967 when Amtrak arrived (the other being Flint), receiving a college education for its citizens while also becoming home to significant numbers of professional athletes (eager Tigers fans can still be seen at nearby Little Caesar's Pizza)

The purposeful exclusionism associated with early downtown development delayed growth until after World War II when downtown became oneida focus following enactment by then-Mayor Wojciech Jaroszyniak (1948–1951) OFD's "Neighborhood Plan" which called for dense housing developments around University Circle; commercial strips along Main Street; light industry along Water Avenue; parks and open spaces near Ferry Landing
The city of East Grand Rapids was founded in 1834 by John C. Gilbert and others as a mission town, named for the saint Peter. The first post office in the city was opened in 1835, and the first school was built in 1838. In 1840, the city became a county seat of Washtenaw County. In 1865,East Grand Rapids became an independent municipality within Michigan Statehood.
