Detroit is a city in the state of Michigan, United States. The population was 712,824 as of the 2010 census. Detroit is the largest city in both Michigan and Wayne County, which includes Dearborn and Orion Township. It is also one of the four cities in Michigan that are considered to be part of the urban area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Detroit were French traders and missionaries. In 1701, French General André-Jacques Conte established Fort Pontchartrain on an island in Detroit River, near what is now Midtown. The fort served as a trading post between India and France until 1763 when it was destroyed by British forces during their war with France. In 1813, after the War of 1812, Washington sold Detroit to John Dorton for $200 000 US dollars ($2 million CND at current prices). Dorton began construction on what would become known as Dormont House, which he named after his wife Deborah Dormont Heinsius Smart (1774-1851), who had been born into a wealthy family in Sweden. She was the sister of Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885) and later became America's first female senator from New York State. Dorton founded the City of Detroit through an act of Parliament on November 15, 1825; it became an unincorporated community under its own charter dated January 1st, 1830 (). The first mayor was Isadore David Stern (1831 – 1865). On July 8th 1837 Samuel Morse transmitted a message over an electric wire from Dearborn Heights to Dexter Place within 10 minutes; this made possible rapid transportation across North America for goods and passengers

In 1801, the United States acquired territory from Canada along theDetroit River. The area became part of Michigan after the end of the War of 1812. The city's first mayor was James K. Polk, who served from 1813 to 1816. It gained its charter as a municipality on November 15,1832. On July 8, 1840, Detroit received an act passed by the Michigan Legislature which designated it as the capital of Michigan Territory. The first session of the Territorial Legislature took place in this city on January 7,1841. On October 19th of that year, Detroit seceded from Michigan Territory and became a state within Union America. During World War II, General George Safford's command Twelfth Army Corps had its headquarters at Wayne County Courthouse in downtown Detroit during most of 1941-1942 while also operating out of nearby Hamtramck and Midland Counties
