In 1892, Detroit's first gunsmith, Augustus Fenton, opened his shop at 15 James Street. The business continued to grow and prosper until it was destroyed in 1906 by fire.Detroit's first firearms dealer, A.F. Shannon & Co., was founded in 1887 by Arthur Shannon. In 1896, the company became known as the Detroit Firearms Exchange Company and changed its name to the National Sporting Goods Company in 1907 because of its affiliation with the National Rifle Association (NRA).The National Sporting Goods Company relocated to 8 Woodward Avenue in 1924 and became part of Sears Roebuck & Co.. During World War II, the company produced military bazookas and shotguns for use by American forces. The company ceased operations after the war.

In 1814, following the Mexican-American War, Detroit became an American territory under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The city was incorporated as a municipality in 1834. The population of Detroit peaked at over million in 1900, but has since declined to around 300,000 today.
