Coldwater is a small town in Macomb County, Michigan, just east of the city of Detroit. The population was 2,836 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Coldwater was George Crosby in 1824. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the Rouge River. Crosby became involved with local politics, serving as township trustee from 1829 to 1837 and as mayor from 1830 to 1834. In 1835, James Denny platted what is now Coldwater Township on land patented to him by Pontiac Purchase Company president John Fenton. The township was named for General Francis Granger's Headquarters at Coldwater Creek (now part of I-696). Coldwater had its first school in1839; it was a one-room sod building erected by Nicholas Jansen and teacher Ebenezer Herrick. A frame schoolhouse was built next door in 1840 by teacher Jeremiah Sheehan and School District No. 3 superintendent Joseph Hickey. In 1845, Coldwater became a village when it united with nearby Eastpointe to form the Macomb County Village Corporation under then-municipal manager Samuel Auldsbury. That same year saw the opening of the first general store in what is now downtown Coldwater –owned and operated by merchant Levi Haggerty – which served as an important local market until 1959 when it closed its doors permanently due to lack of customers and competition from other stores downtown. Coldwater's earliest settlers were likely those who had arrived during or shortly after Michigan's admission into Confederation on July 4, 1796: Augustus Willson (1795), John Armstrong (1800), Isaac Goodrich (1802), James Byrnes (1805) David Browning (1807/08), Levi Haggerty (1810/11), Job Searles(1812/13) and Daniel McNamara(1815). Coldwater was founded in 1837 by Nicholas Armitage and his wife Sarah. The town became a post office in 1840, and a village in 1846. By 1850, Coldwater had a population of around 100 people. It then became an agricultural community with fruit orchards, corn cribs, and dairy farms. In the early 20th century, Coldwater grew into a small industrial town with factories producing goods such as rubber shoes and automobiles. However, the town's economic decline began in the 1930s as depression-era production decreased demand for goods made at Coldwater's factories. In the 1940s, Coldwater returned to its traditional agricultural economy with land holdings including 3 churches and 9 homes. By 1950, only 2 people lived in the town; most residents worked outside of it. In 1955, through a local government merger process known as "accomplishments", Coldwater was annexed by Grand Rapids; however, it remained separate from that city until becoming part of its official name on November 1st of that year.
