Coldwater is a town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Oakland Township local government district. The Muskegon Heights School District and Oakland Township Schools are both in Coldwater. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coldwater were French fur traders from Quebec in 1679. They named the area "Niaux" (Niawax), meaning "an opening where trade can take place." In 1812, General Anthony Wayne founded a fort at Niaux which became known as Fort Wayne because it served as headquarters for Indian Affairs during the War of 1812. In 1815, when Canada gained independence from Great Britain, they redesignated Niaux as Coldwater after their then-adjacent port on Lake Erie with that same name. The townspeople renamed themselves "Muskegon Heights" to reflect their status within Muskegon County and to distinguish them from other villages in that county that still bore British names like Ottawa and Grand rapids. By 1840, most residents had either moved away or abandoned Coldwater because of poor water quality and difficulty getting enough timber to build homes. A few families did stay until 1850 due to new lumber mills opening up along the Muskegon River nearby; however, all these mills closed by 1870s due to competition from cheaper American mills starting up around that time. As early as 1830, there had been references made to a large body of cold water lying between Shiawassee and Saginaw Rivers called "the Upper Peninsular". This body of water lay north-northwest of present-day Coldwater on what is now US Highway 11 east of Kalamazoo National Forest Road #2A near milepost 5½ on US Highway M-10 southbound (now milepost 6). The first map published showing this body of cold water was made by Daniel Webster in 1834 while he was working for John Cranch for his exploration efforts through what is now Michigan's Upper Peninsula region including present day Lower Peninsula including Muskegon Heights/Oakland Township

Coldwater, Michigan is a town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights micropolitan area. The town was founded in 1855 by John Pearsall and James Miller as a post office on the east bank of Coldwater Creek. It became a village in 1859, and then a town in 1871. The name "Coldwater" comes from an Indian word meaning "coldstream." The first store opened in 1865 and the first school in 1870. The first doctor was Dr. Cushing who served from 1865 to 1868. In 1916, Coldwater had its own hospital with four beds and it also had its own fire department which was one of the earliest such departments in Michigan. In 1951, Coldwater received its charter as an incorporated city and has since been growing rapidly with new businesses opening up around every corner including several restaurants, two banks (one national), two health clinics (one for children and one for adults), three sawmills (two woodworking mills), two built-up areas - called Park Rapids which houses some of the more upscale retail stores within walking distance of downtowns park Riverside Center which is home to several large buildings housing various businesses as well as CentralMI's largest library system - all while maintaining core services like Police Department; Fire Department; Streets/Public Works; Schools; Parks/Recreation
