The first settlers in Coldwater were fur traders who came overland from Canada in search of new land to hunt and fish. By 1824, most of these men had left the area after purchasing land from the Indians they had encountered along their journey. One of those original settlers was Samuel Clements, who arrived in 1825 and started trading goods with the local Potawatomi people. In 1830, Clements married Maria Roberts (the daughter of Colonel John Roberts), which led to Coldwater becoming known as “Roberts Town” because so many of its early residents were related to him through marriage or adoption. Coldwater also played an important role during the War Between the States; during that time it was one of several communities along Upper Peninsula disputed areas where Union forces skirmished with pro-Confederate sympathizers. In 1951, when Interstate 94 bypassed Coldwater en route to Detroit, much attention turned towards the small town as it continued to exist but had no direct connection to any other parts of Michigan other than neighboring rural villages like Marquette and Traverse City. Over time however, locals began reminiscing about how much fun they used to have driving down Route 9 between towns until you reached either Marquette or Traverse City; then all you could do was park at one of those two places for hours before continuing your journey another ten miles downriver! Today there are just a few hundred residents living within walking distance of most businesses while most services remain concentrated nearer downtown; nevertheless, Coldwater still retains some unique aspects that make it worth your time if you’re looking for an interesting getaway from civilization: For example, everyone who lives there knows each other pretty well so there isn’t really anything socializing away from home “necessary” (ie., alcohol). This typeof isolation doesn't always make life easier though – sometimes things just seem harder when everyone around you seems so busy instead of invested in what they have back home… kindof like how I feel when I'm out partying all day long without ever having seen my family AGAIN!
The first permanent residents of Coldwater were the Methodist Episcopal missionaries, who arrived in 1835. The town was founded by Nicholas D’Angelo and his family in 1836. It became a village in 1838, and then a town in 1840. In 1847, the area became part of Shiawassee County when it was created from portions of Shiawassee and Ottawa counties. The population declined during the Great Lakes fever pandemic of 1855-1857, but increased after the arrival of railroad ran through the area. Coldwater lost its status as a town in 1889 when it merged with Battle Creek to form Lansing Township.
