Today, Coldwater is a small, unincorporated community located within the city of Flint. It has a population of about 150 people. Coldwater’s history can be traced back to 1834 when George Washington Woodward and his brother Samuel Woodward founded the town of Coldwater on the east side of the Kawkawke River in what is now downtown Flint. At that time, it was one of the most remote communities in Michigan and only a few miles from Grand Rapids. In addition to their business acumen, these brothers also had an entrepreneurial spirit which helped them build a successful community during their time as residents of Coldwater. The first buildings were built in what is now downtown Flint and later along Clinton Avenue. The town grew quickly due to its proximity to both major cities in Michigan and its natural resources which included frozen watermelons, rivers and lakes. By 1850, Coldwater had a population of over 200 people and boasted several businesses including a store, bank, ferry service and school system. During the early years of World War I (1914-18),Coldwater served as an important supply depot for military forces stationed in Battle Creek County near present day Midland City. The community also hosted various local events such as dances at local churches or social functions at homes around wintertime until hostilities ceased on Armistice Day 1918). In 1934, when George Washington Woodward passed away after many years living in Coldwater with his wife Anna Maria (née Parkhurst) he bequeathed $10 000 to help establish the George Washington Woodward Foundation which provides support for education opportunities within Waterford Township (now part of Flint). That same year saw another milestone as Coldwater became an officially recognized community with incorporation under state lawmaking process by then Governor Alfred Jelinek following approval by Mayor John Smedley who recommended incorporation due to its strategic location between two major metropolitan areas; Detroit & Lansing; its close proximity to key military installations; Its established business climate; Its well-developed infrastructure including schools & hospital; And significant contributions made by citizens thru donations/ Volunteering/ Service
