The first gun sights were designed and built in the town of Coldwater, Michigan in 1875 by Amos Badger. The Badger Sight Company was the first firearms manufacturer in America to develop and sell precision rifle sights. Gun sights were used on rifles during the American Civil War to help shooters aim their weapons accurately. By 1865, most Union soldiers had replaced their old crossbows with rifles, so a new type of firearm sight was needed. The Americans Pattern Rifle Sight Company developed a design for a rifle sight that could be placed on the barrel of a gun and relied on an adjustable elevation system to maintain accuracy. In 1866, it became known as the “Gunsight” and was adopted by the U.S. Army as part of its Springfield Pattern Rifle System (USARS). The town experienced rapid growth following World War II due to federal agricultural programs aimed atynesising agriculture in Michigan. However, this prosperity came crashing down after oil prices crashed in 1973 and subsequent recession caused many companies to leave the state; although some residents have tried to revive local businesses there has been little success so far. The population peaked at around 3500 in 2000 but now numbers just under 1800 residents according to 2010 census data. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment activity taking place near downtown Coldwater including new housing developments headlined by a $100 million mixed-use retail project called MKE Place that opened in late 2013 adjacent to Interstate 94/US 127 south of town;[1] also close by are two large shopping malls: One anchored by Sears Holdings Home Hardware store located off I-94 east of town while another anchored by JCPenney is located off US 127 north of town across from MLK Jr.'s Elementary School]. Most recently a new four-story office building completed earlier this year known as The Mistake which overlooks I-94 west of town opposite one end of Big Rapids Lake
