The first settler in Coldwater was George Davenport Sr., who arrived in 1839 from Indiana with his family; he built a small cabin on Hwy 10 south of town northwest of where present-day White House Rd meets emptying watershed that forms part of Temescal Creek watershed
In 1873, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill recognizing Coldwater as a town. The town was organized on February 14, 1873. It had a population of seventy-six people.
