Coldwater is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1834 by John H. Coldwater and encompasses an area of 6 square miles (15 km²). The first post office in Coldwater opened on May 10, 1835, under the name "Holt." The name "Coldwater" was chosen because it was so cold during the winter months that there wasn't enough water to baptize people or provide drinking water for mills. In 1836, John H. Coldwater donated land for a gristmill on his farm which became the first mill in Coldwater Township. In 1837, he donated more land for a school and churches started up around this time too. In 1840, George Wigger moved from Moline to start a wagon manufactory here with his son-in-law Nicholas Bemis and other men from Moline who were interested in starting businesses along the new Detroit River Road that connected Muskegon County with Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Coldwater was a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The community was located on the east bank of the Manistee River, about 12 miles (19 km) north-northeast of Lansing and 14 miles (23 km) south-southwest of Detroit. Randall and Company, which supplied drinking water to soldiers stationed at Fort Gratiot on the west bank of the river. In 1875, Congressman James Wickersham donated land toColdwater for a public square; construction began on this square in 1876 and it was dedicated in 1880. The cornerstone for the new courthouse was laid by Governor Andrew Johnson on October 8, 1886. During World War II, Coldwater played an important role as one of only two U.S.-controlled ports open to Allied shipping through the eastern portage between Lakes Huron and Superior; during that time it also served as headquarters for Carrier Commanding Unit Two (COU2), responsible for carrier operations out of Mackinac Island Naval Air Station (Mackinac Island NAS). After hostilities ended, Coldwater reverted back to an agricultural center until it experienced rapid population growth after enactment of legislation creating Kalamazoo County in 1965; today it is known primarily as a tourist destination due to its rich history and attractions including several museums dating back to before 1860.
