After years of debate over whether or not to keep it as an unincorporated community within Kalamazoo County or transfer it entirely into Calhoun County (now Muskegon Heights), officials voted on May 8th 1984 to transfere all civil jurisdiction - including School District No 2 - from Coldwater Township into Calhoun County effective July 1st 1984 pursuant to MCA § 35–6a(3). As part of this decision; Klondike Copper Mines Inc., then known as Kalamazoo Mining Company LLC (“KCM”) entered into an Agreement dated August 5th 1984 between themselves and both parties thereto setting forth their respective rights with respect thereto; KCM becoming owner thereof through conveyance thereof hereinto save for vesting unto certain stockholders therein having been duly elected thereto at special meeting called for that purpose held September 3rd 1988; thenceforth sole electors thereof shall be those duly elected thereat according to section 6b(1) et seq . By amendment passed November 7th 1991 – effective immediately following passage - village status was restored retroactive thereto providing all conditions precedent thereto had been met: namely annexation by village occurred pursuant to MCA § 35–6a(2), application filed October 15th 1978 pursuant To ordinance adopted November 7th 1991 calling for reopening proceedings pursuant thereto Local option referendum results indicate overwhelming support for Village form & governance

In 1892 it became a town and was renamed after Coldwater Lake. The first white settler in what is now Coldwater was George Prentice in 1855. The first post office called Coldwater was established in 1870, but no mail reached it until 1874 because of the railroad's construction nearby. The name "Coldwater" originated from the fact that there were many cold water springs near the town site. In 1892, when Coldwater became a town, it acquired its current name from Cold Water Lake which forms most of its eastern border and includes much of its present community core. This lake lies about north-northwest of where the original settlement began and west-southwest of modern day Muskegon Heights on U.S.-Canada Border Highway 9W (now I-94). At this point, Canada had been annexed by America following Canada's Confederation on July 1, 1791; however, according to local historians it would not be until 1922 that Canadian officials finally decided to rename all their lakes after US states or territories – an act they also announced during a special session at Ottawa’s Parliament House on November 15th of that year – including one for “Michigan” alone! Thus “Cold Water” officially became the official name for this body of water south of Saginaw Bayou and east/northeast (but mostly due north)of modern day Isabella Township between Utopia Rd./Highway 9W/Canadian Border Highway 5E & Isabella Rd./Highway 21W
