The first settler in what would become Clawson was John Hulse in 1837. He and his family bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from the Indian tribe Ojibwa on which they built their log cabin and raised corn, potatoes, and pigs. Hulse's grandson George W. Hulse donated more land to the town in 1865. The first post office was established at Clawson in 1875. In 1912, clawson became one of seven townships that formed Muskegon Heights Township when it was separated from Oakland County. In 1928, Clawson incorporated as a village under the name "Clawson". It reverted to its original name in 1951 when it became an incorporated city again under the name "Clawson". The City of Clawson has had its ups and downs over its history; however, there have been many proud moments for residents including being named one of America’s “Most Diverse Cities” by Forbes magazine twice consecutively and being designated as a “Best Place to Live” by both publications by voters during multiple election cycles dating back to 1978-present; all while still remaining within Muskegon Heights School District boundaries! Clawson is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the north shore of Lake Huron. It was founded in 1831 by George Clawson, a Canadian fur trader and settler. The community was named for him and his brother, James Clawson, who also founded the village of North Branch in 1834. In 1855, Clawson became one of eighteen townships served by the newly created City of Plymouth Township. He died there in 1865. Clawson has a rich history that goes back to its founding days. George Clawson was an important figure in early Michigan history and his contributions to the town are memorialized today with various streets and buildings being named after him such as Clawson Avenue, Clawson Road, and Clawson Park. Clawson was first settled by Canadians who arrived during the period known as the "gold Rush" in what is now Michigan Territory in 1831. By 1840, however, most of Canada had been acquired by the United States and new settlers began arriving from Quebec Province across Lake Huron seeking land for themselves and their families. George Clawson among these newcomers was one such individual - he arrived in 1840 from Toronto with his family to found what would eventually become Clawson on South Shore Drive just east of present-day Detroit Lakes National Recreation Area. George's father had been born at Brockville (now Ottawa) on Georgian Bay about 1792/3 years earlier; James had followed suit some years later when he became proprietor of Andover House estate near present-day Grand Rapids (then part of Washtenaw County). When George's father died suddenly aged 63 while camping near Sault Ste Marie on July 6th 1831 - just nine months after ClAWSON FOUNDATION WAS PLANNED - young George took over management of house & property which numbered only twelve settlers then living scattered throughout Muskegon County including four sons & two daughters under eight years old! With help from older brothers James & John & others involved locally or connected thereto plus fur trading partners John Fraser & David Thompson (& wife), GEOFFREY CLAWSON CHARGED WITH SETTING UP SCHOOL IN THE SHALLOW WATERSIDE AREA BETWEEN SCHWABB MEETING ROAD NW OF FRASERVILLE AND HARBOR FOR FIRST WHITE IN MI ABOVE THIRTY YEARS! This initial effort failed due to lack OF FEES BUT CLAWSON MEN HELPED TO ESTABLISH CITY OF PORTLAND ON LAPIDARY CROSS RD JUST EAST OF WHERE CLAWSON STREET NOW STANDS AS ONE RESIDENTIAL HOME CONTINUES TO OPERATE TODAY
