Clawson was a small town in Washtenaw County, Michigan at the time of its incorporation in 1837. It was located on the east side of the Grand River, about 12 miles north-northwest of Detroit and 8 miles south-southwest of Ann Arbor. The town's original site was on what is now Clawson Township. The first settler in Clawson was John Clawson, who came to the area in 1812 from parts of British Columbia. Clawson became a village in 1837 and was named for him. In 1839, it had a population of just under 100 people. In 1862, Clawson became part of the newly formed municipality of Ann Arbor and remained so until 1974 when it reverted back to Washtenaw County status. As with most small towns in Michigan during that time, farming and manufacturing were mainstay industries. In 1865, Clawson had a schoolhouse and one store; by 1870 there were two stores and three schools.
