Clawson is a small town in the lower Peninsula of Michigan. It lies on the eastern edge of the Lower Peninsula, on the shores of Lake Superior. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Ottawa–Keweenaw County, Michigan Micropolitan Statistical Area. The earliest inhabitants of Clawson were Algonquians and Potawatomi Indians. The first white settlers in this area were George Fenton and his family who arrived around 1800. In 1813, Clawson was platted as a village by John Dickey and others from Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first post office was established in 1815 and named for Captain Hugh Clawson (1783-1851) leader of HMS "Patriots" during the American Revolution.Captain Hugh Clawson also donated land to build what is now Clawson High School which opened its doors in 1925. In 1870, Captain Hugh's grandson John Dickey founded Midland Savings Bank which became one of America's largest banks with over $1 billion in assets as of 2006 In 1907, Congressman James Waddell visited Clawson to inspect an agricultural experiment being conducted by US Departmentof Agriculture in honor of then President Theodore Roosevelt At that time there were few paved roads or sidewalks so Congressman Waddell went door to door soliciting contributions for local street improvements After his visit he dedicated two miles (3 km) east of downtown Clawson off State Route 9W between Maple Avenue and Park Avenue to create what is known today as Waddell Road after him This motivated other western farmers to develop their areas near this stretch of road starting from about 1910 . One such development was Saginaw Township which annexed much larger chunk than what currently exists within our community including parts north/eastward extending into neighboring townships such as Coleman Heights and other areas well beyond our current boundaries .
