Clawson is a town in the Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 751 at the 2010 census. Clawson was founded in 1854 by John Fenton and his family. The community of Clawsonville was platted in 1871.
Clawson is a small town in the western Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Clawson is bordered by Lapeer to the west and east, Saginaw to the north, Bay City to the northwest, and Grand Rapids to the south. The name "Clawson" is derived from "Clanton," one of five townships in Fenton Township which included Clawson. The first settlers in what is now Clawson were French Canadians who arrived around 1795. In 1837, when Snyder County was created from parts of Washtenaw County, Clawson became part of that county. A post office called Clawson was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1861, James Withers built a log cabin on land which he donated to the community for use as a schoolhouse. That same year, members of the Methodist Episcopal Church founded a church here which remains active today as Christ Lutheran Church. In 1871-72 Elisha Goudreau erected a sawmill on what is now Main Street; this mill continued operations until it closed down in 1922. In 1902-03 Charles Hodge Sr., owner of an agricultural implement company named Hodge Bros., moved his business into what is now Main Street from another location nearby and started an industry that would be very important in village history: ice cream production began here (it would continue until 1954). In 1910-11 local farmers organized themselves into what became known as the Farmer's Elevator Co.; this organization helped supply fresh produce to restaurants throughout southeastern Michigan through buying and selling vehicles equipped with refrigeration facilities surmounted by large ice chests used for storage purposes only during summer months when temperatures were above .50 degrees Celsius or warmer (the coldest temperature ever recorded at any level within Greater Detroit). By 1915 most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere so that new construction began on present day Main Street—this included residences dating back to 1840 which were completed including two schools—and First National Bank Building along with several other businesses before permanent residents returned again around 1920 afterWWII shortages caused by communism made Detroit much more expensive than prices available there allowed for such things as home ownership rates being much lower than they were back then so many people simply sold their homes back then while those still owning ones moved away purely out of economic necessity rather than choice due largely to high crime rates then also combined with citywide development taking place making life difficult even without current city services
