Clawson is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the southern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Clawson was fur trader John James Audubon in 1817 and he named it for Colonel Nicholas Clawson, an American officer who had been killed during the War of 1812. Colonel Clawson's son Abraham Clawson settled here in 1825 and developed this area into a small farming community with a post office and school. In 1829, General George Armstrong Custer settled nearby in what is now Warren County; his family also established a farm here and built a cabin which became known as Custer House. During World War I, many soldiers from MichiganService fought in France; one such soldier was William Haskins Clawson (1887-1964). He enlisted in 1917 as an Infantryman with Company K 2nd Battalion 102nd Field Artillery Regiment at Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and served overseas until 1919 when he returned home to find that his unit had been disbanded two months before he would have expected it to be discharged because of his military service abroad. After leaving the army he worked for several years as an insurance agent before starting his own company which conducted business out of his house on Alger Road until he retired from that business in 1951 after more than fifty years operations carrying on under one name or another including twenty five years as owner/operator of Gilead Laboratories Inc., one hundred fifty nine days as President/CEO thereof). Clawson, Michigan is a small town in the heart of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 4,733 at the 2010 census. Clawson is known for its corn and apple crops, as well as its annual Mid-Michigan Folk Festival which draws over 100,000 people to the town each year. The first settlement in what is now Clawson was made by farmers from Decatur County on the east side of the Straits of Mackinac River in 1837. They named their community after General James Wilkinson, who had been captured and brought before President Andrew Jackson and given a choice between execution or deportation to Canada. He chose exile and this community became known as Wilkinson's Landing on the south side of Mackinac Island. Over time, other settlers arrived and soon there were several churches in town including First Methodist church (1841), United Presbyterian church (1843), African American Baptist church (1846), German Reformed Church (1848) and Russian Orthodox cathedral (1915). Clawson grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its prime location on Mackinac Island as a key stopover for travelers between Detroit and White Lake Township on Huron Peninsula. In 1892 it had 1 store, 5 families living in 20 houses, $5 per week worth of groceries, $2 per day worth of clothes and just $1 earned by working off one’s debt with prostitution or farming labor. By 1910 Clawson boasted 10 stores with a population of 508 residents along with an elementary school ($10 per student) and two hotels: The George Hotel(now called The Lodge)(founded 1865)and The Red Lion Hotel(founded 1907). During World War II much activity took place at nearby Rosie Field Air Force Base which included manufacturing operations for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; production at Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Assembly Plant; training camps for use by military engineers; housing for service members; airfields used by Bomber Command RAF No 2 Operational Training Unit; ammunition dumps belonging to artillery pieces stationed around Kalkaska County; salt mines; phosphate mine workings near present day Wabasha Street & Mansion Road NW; lumber yards active until 1959 when Brushy Lumber Company closed shop because of competition from aluminum producers within miles radius One significant event that occurred during WWII while located in Clawson wasn't simply war related but also scientific: development began on what would become NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center - home since 1958 to today's Johnson Space Center - thanks largely to local financial support from US Steel Corporation owner J P Morgan Chase banker Harry Price MD
Clawson was founded in 1824 by Richard Clawson. Clawson, a farmer and lumberman, came up with the idea to name his town after himself. He named it Clawson after the ownership of a large piece of land in the community. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of around 100 people. By 1835, Clawson had built a small sawmill and began to manufacture lumber. In 1841, Clawson married Jane Dickey and the couple moved to nearby Grosse Pointe for easier transportation to market their products. By 1850, Clawson's mill had been enlarged and he began producing plank wood for shipbuilding. In 1860, Clawson sold his business to Simon Hardware Company for $1 million.
