By 1910, the census had increased to 597 people living in an area that included parts of both Muskegon and Oakland counties

Clawson was a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, founded by John Clawson in 1835. It was located on the mouth of the Muskegon River and became an important trading post on the Great Lakes because of its location. The town declined after World War II, but it has been revived as a tourist destination since 2000. John Clawson was born in 1790 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to parents who were white farmers. He moved to what is now Clawson Township in 1835 and started a successful fur-trading business. He married Ann (née McNaught) in 1838 and they had six children. John died in 1865 at age 78 years. His wife continued their fur-trading business until her death in 1888; she had eight children with John. Clawson's successor as owner of the township began developing it into a commercial center on the Great Lakes region during the 19th century. The first store opened here in 1851 and land was bought for a canal system that connectedMuskegon Bay to Lake Superior via Sault Ste Marie). A post office was established here in 1858; growth quickened when steamboats arrived from Detroit to carry goods upriver to market; sawmills were built for flour and lumber production; brickyards were established; churches were built; schools were begun; and railways arrived, connecting Clawson with other communities along the lakeshore including Traverse City, Marquette Heights, Greenville Junction, Holland Landing et al.. In 1898, Clawson became part of Lansing County when it was created from parts of Shiawassee County and Muskegon County.. By 1900 there had been additions tot he city limits: 8 blocks wide by 12 blocks long with streets running east-west (this area is now Downtown Clawson). The population reached 10,000 by 1920 . The first newspaper printed here debuted on October 3rd, 1872 under name "The Daily Herald". Today's paper is called "The Chronicle"
