Clawson is a small town in the eastern part of Michigan, United States. It is located on the Ottawa River, about 25 miles east of Detroit. The first mention of Clawson was in 1837 when it was called "Clawson on the Ottawa". In 1871, Clawson became a borough and then a city. On November 16, 1907, Clawson was merged with other municipalities to form the City of Detroit. Logan (founder and first mayor), Dr. George Witherspoon (a doctor and pharmacist who also founded Witherspoon Hospital), Major General Smedley Butler (presidential candidate from New York), Augustus Kelley (founder and first owner and president of Kelley’s Clothing Store) and others who saw Knife Making as an opportunity to make a substantial income from their businesses. Clawson's rich history can be found in its numerous buildings that have been home to businesses such as banks, schools, churches and hospitals over the years - all of which have had an impact on bothClawson residents and those living nearby. Clawson, Michigan was first settled in 1836 by a group of men from Illinois. The community name derived from the natural resources located there such as timber and coal. Clawson quickly becoming a center for the fur trade thanks to its location on the Detroit River. In 1849, Clawson became the seat of Shiawassee County after it was formed from part of Ottawa County. The county was named for General James K. Polk who served as President during the War Between the States. Afterward, most of Shiawassee County were annexed by Lansing in 1865 which made Clawson one of the last Michigan counties to become incorporated as a municipality.
Clawson is a small, Midwestern town located in the Shiawassee County of Michigan. The population was 5,800 at the 2000 census. Clawson has a rich history dating back to 1849 when it was founded as a post office by John A. Clawson and his brother Amos Clawson. It has been called "the little town with a big story". Clawson's first settler were two brothers, John A. and Amos Clawson, who arrived in 1849 from Ohio. They erected a cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street and started farming their land. In 1851 they married Sarah Henson and moved to their present location on the west side of Main Street where they lived until 1863 when they built the first schoolhouse in what is now Clawson Elementary School. The original school building still stands today and serves as the community center for Clawson . In 1865, John A. Clawson became mayor of Shiawassee County after being elected to that position by popular vote from his constituents. He reelected three times before retiring in 1901 due to old age. His son John A., Jr., served as mayor from 1932-1937 and then followed his father into retirement until he died in 1949 . In 1951, both Mr. and Mrs. George Fenton donated land adjacent to Main Street so that an elementary school could be constructed which would serve local children until 1957 when Grades K-6 were added . In 1965, Mrs . Fenton opened her own grocery store on Market Street which continued operation until 1984 When it closed due to economic conditions within the town . From 1985-1996 Mr Fenton operated Anheuser Busch products out of an old garage across from Main Street which also served as the town hall during these years

The Congregational church burned down in 1865, but the Presbyterian church still stands today (it has been renovated several times). The first school opened in 1825 and continues to serve today as Clawson Middle School. In addition to its importance as a commercial center, Clawson also played an important role in American culture during its early years. It was home to both the United States Congressmen George Washingtons (1921-28) and Harry S Truman (1945-1953), as well as writer Pee Wee Reese (1920-1994). As well, many famous musicians have made their homes here including Joe Bonamassa (born Joseph David Bonamassa Jr.), Tupac Shakur (), Phil Collins (), Mariah Carey (), Gene Simmons (), Mick Jagger () and more.
Clawson was founded by John Clawson in 1824. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Detroit River and its manufacturing capabilities. In 1848, Clawson became the county seat of Wayne County. In 1902, Clawson was renamed for General George Washington Clark, Jr.
