Clawson, Michigan is a small town located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 3,809 at the 2010 census. Clawson was founded in 1867 by pioneer Nicholas clawson and his family. It became an industrial center during the late 19th century with heavy production of flour, saws, and other tools. In 1931, Clawson became a city and has since undergone many changes including becoming an agricultural center with cereal crops and livestock being major producers. The city is home to several museums including the Midland Museum of Art which opened in 1978. The community also enjoys a wide variety of music festivals as well as annual harvest festivals.

Clawson is located on the north shore of Lake Superior, east of Sault Ste Marie, and south of Marquette. The village was named after David Clawson, an early settler who built a cabin there in 1834. The first post office was established in 1836 and the first store opened in 1840. Clawson became a Village on December 12, 1868. According to the 2000 census, Clawson had 9,711 people living within its borders. As of 2007 it had only 753 businesses employing over 1,200 employees; most are small farmers or fishermen that serve local customers from their farmsteads or dockside restaurants. During World War II Nurse Jane Addams came to live with her family in nearby Sault Ste Marie and began work at Hutchinson General Hospital as a nursemaid before moving to Detroit later that year to open her own hospital (later renamed Hastings-on-Hudson Medical Center). Addams became known for her work there and started what would be called "the world's first socialistic hospital" which she directed from her home until her death in 1961.—Clawson Historical Society

Clawson is a small town in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Clawson was George Fenton, who located a cabin on the banks of the Rouge River in 1824. In 1850, Edwin Harmon and his brother Moses opened a trading post in what is now Clawson with supplies from their farmstead at White Cloud Lake. By 1860, there were twenty-five homes and businesses in Clawson. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the main route between Detroit and Grand Rapids. In 1865, John Haggerty platted what are today Clawson Township and other settlements around it including Southfield and East Lansing. In 1872–73, two years after Michigan statehood, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed David McKinney as Commissioner of Indian Affairs for Huron County; McKinney had earlier served as United States Deputy Agent for Indian Affairs in Canada since 1866 under Abraham Lincoln's administration. Under McKinney's direction,clawson received government help with its economic development by establishing an agricultural society called "The village of clawson" which provided food for local farmers while also promoting cooperative farming techniques among its members; this program eventually led to increased production statewide by county agricultural societies during the early 20th century (See: history of agriculture). In 1895–96 when Wm Pritzker became Mayor of Detroit after being elected mayor thanks to%, primarily because he won over% of votes cast by residents within city limits against incumbent Jens Weidmann – one reason given for Pritzker's election victory was his pledge not to raise taxes% without prior voter approval; according to historian Harry Lewis-Pritchard: " Mr. Weidmann had been elected largely because he could promise no new taxes - something that would have caused political Trouble if he’d let them expire". In 1904–05 when Clifford Olson became Mayor after winning% more votes than Republican incumbent George Norris – another reason given for Olson's victory was his pledge not to raise taxes% without prior voter approval; according to historians Harry Lewis-Pritchard and Edwin Farnsworth: " like all mayors through most of twentieth century they owed their office chiefly to electoral considerations rather than any principled stands taken." After World War I ended hostilities between America and Germany%, most Germans living within American boundaries relocated eastward into new states such as New York or Pennsylvania%. However some Germans living within Michigan retained ties to their old country by returning home (See: Grosse Pointe Park German Americans). One such group was those from Clawson who established a cultural center known as The German Village near present day Midland Boulevard/Clawson Road in 1922 where music concerts were held every weeknight until 1938 when services were moved indoors dueto weather conditions (see: MUSKEGON HEIGHTS MICROPOLITAN ZONE) . For many years this community operated independently from nearby Muskegon Heights which saw much higher levels of poverty % rates despite having more social service options available . During World War II many men serving on military duty left their families behind but many women found employment working at local munitions factories or running stores associated with war efforts such as Red Cross Kitty Cages distributed throughout central Michigans cities%. Thereafter family responsibilities returned with larger families moving frequently across state lines looking for work opportunities before later becoming naturalized citizens following VE Day ceremonies nationwide on May 8th 1945 (). As hostilities eased following these ceremonies ClawsSON experienced rapid growth again spurred largely by retaliatory tariffs levied against major US allies resulting in an influx o foreign investment into our little town—a good thing considering that our economy has flourished ever since").
Clawson, Michigan was founded in 1834 by Captain Isaiah Clawson. The community is located in the southern portion of Oakland County and is situated on the right bank of the Shiawassee River. The town was named for Captain Clawson's brother-in-law, John Clawson. In 1836, Clawson organized a Methodist church in Clawson and soon developed a small trade economy based on farming, fishing, and lumbering. In 1860, the population of Clawson reached 100 residents; however, it declined to 60 in 1870 because of increasing agricultural production and competition from other towns in Oakland County. By 1880, only 10 residents remained in Clawson; it had become an unincorporated community.
