Clawson, Michigan was established in 1834 by Solomon Clawson. The area that is now Clawson was part of the Muskegon Heights Purchase from the Potomac Company. The purchase included about 12,000 acres of land and it became known as Clawson Township. Solomon Clawson had come to the United States from Russia after the fall of czar Nicholas II in 1917. He had been a general in czarist Russia and he later worked for Standard Oil in Detroit. In 1834, Clawson bought a piece of land in what is now Clawson Township and began to build a home on it. He named his home "Clawson" after himself and his wife, Sarah Ann (born 1795). The first settlers in what is now Clawson were three men: John Armstrong, Ebenezer Holmes, and Israel Harkness. They arrived on horseback from Detroit on October 9th, 1835. John Armstrong became the first postmaster at Clawson and started receiving mail there on November 1st, 1835.
