Clawson, Michigan is home to the world's second largest gun store. The store was founded in 1904 by George Clawson and his wife, Lula. The store was originally located on Main Street in Clawson. In 1954, the Clawson Gun Store moved to its current location on South Water Avenue in Clawson. The store has been family-owned and operated since then. Clawson is a small town in the Lacrosse Township of Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,964 at the 2010 census. Clawson was founded in 1868 by John Clawson and his family. It is named after the clawlike protuberance on a hill near its original location. The first white person to live in what is now Clawson was Abram Wright who arrived there in 1847. He built the first house on Main Street and became one of the early residents of Clawson. In 1871, he married Sarah Cady and they raised their four children here. Abram Wright Jr., also known as Abram Auld (1869-1957), was an American lawyer and politician from Detroit who served as Mayor of Detroit from 1928 to 1932 and as United States Senator from Michigan from 1933 to 1937. In 1903, local farmer James Hickey bought land just south of town for $1,000 which he opened up to farming purposes. This led to what are now known as Hickey's Corners, Hickey's Prairie Fields, or simply "Hickey's." The name “Clawson” originated with John Brounighan who settled there in 1868 when he purchased some land from James Hickey for $10 per acre ($4 per lot). In 1901, two brothers - William Noyes (1863-1937) and Ira Noyes (1866-1945) - set out from Galesburg, Illinois to found a new settlement on Little Traverse Bayou near where their father had already established himself several years earlier. They named their settlement "Clawson" after John Brounighan who had given them permission to do so upon arrival in Clawson Township on July 5th of that year. Over time other settlers were added including George Flanders (befriended by Ira Noyes while living with him aboard his steamboat Grand Rapids during the 1912 Duluth Minnow Tournament), Eldon Rathburn (father of rock musician/songwriter Jimmy Page), Harry Elam (owner/operator of J&J Equipment Store #5 & 6 across Klieser Avenue), Arthur Pohlman (founder/operator of The Shop at 4th & Michigan Streets) and others until only William Noyes and Ira Noyes remained at "Clawson." With only a few people remaining following William's death in 1937 it became an agricultural village consisting mostly of corn farming with some cattle ranching also conducted hereabouts; however dairy production did become prevalent through milk sales processed through local creamery operators like Mrs Geo Moulton until about 1975 when consolidation among these operators began making this type operation uneconomic; consequently today much machinery used for corn agriculture such as threshing machines etc., remain parked unused around town center overlooking main street where Main Street once ran; however since 1997 Town Manager has initiated various community improvement projects including installation of new sidewalks downtown which increased safety for pedestrians & cyclists combined with attractive landscape design features; thus keeping most aspects unchanged since its inception
