Clawson is a small city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,707 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Lansing–Winnebago metropolitan area. Clawson was founded in 1836 by John Chapman and his brother James as an outpost on what is now known as Township Road 9 east of present-day Clawson. It became incorporated as a town in 1855, and it became a village in 1907. The current form of Clawson was adopted on November 3, 1909. The community near the mouth of the Muskegon River was first settled by fishermen from Norway who had come to dry up the river's flow after leaving their boatloads of ice each winter when it rained during December and January. The first white settlers were John Dickson and his family who arrived around 1840, followed soon afterwards by Cornelius McClure and others from Detroit. According to local legend, Canadia (a large fish) which could be found only in fresh waterometime between 1870 and 1880 came ashore along side various fishing vessels trying to determine if this area might have been suitable for settlement but never made it ashore again despite being offered many bribes from locals; eventually one fisherman caught a glimpse of its back inside an old mill before helping himself to some food while others watched helplessly. When he finally returned home with enough information about where Canada could be found to warrant further exploration, his neighbor Dickson scooped him up bodily into his wagon bed and took him right to shore where he landed - giving us our earliest reference to what we now call "Clawson". In 1865 or 1866 Amos Beeson set out across country with two oxen teams following rocks down stream until they reached a place called Dawson Creek which drained into Muskegon River near Red Cliffs; thence Beaver built ferryboats crossing over Muskegon River until 1861 when he established post office at Rockville Landing downstream from present day Clawson on land patented by Washington county in that year; post office function continued until 1915 when it moved upstream under statehood to take its current site at Depot Street just south of Main Street; prior location included building used for schoolhouse on north side of Depot Street before that property was purchased by City Council for use as parking lot 1988-1990 In 1916 Wm Pritchard started selling ice cream from truck stopped on corner concession stand facing south Main Street opposite High School after dark In 1922 operation changed name & ownership back to original Atchison Butte Creamery Inc.; chili produced here since 1924 By 1954 company sold out production here & all operations moved elsewhere This factory produced 2 million lbs/year chocolate products including 1 million lbs/year peanut butter products From 1955 onward production shifted entirely to new facility located adjacent To High School now used as gymnasium years later consolidation ledto closure Of original Atchison Butte Creamery Inc., one reason being lack thereofof successor companies able’t keep up With increased demandFor product formerly suppliedBy Atchison Butte Creamery

Named after Major General Arthur Purdy (1815-1888), owner and developer of what would eventually be known as The Strip – a shopping center with housing developments, office buildings, hotels and other uses – it was one of several early malls built around downtown Detroit during the heyday of post-World War II suburbiaification in North America In 2006, Clawson's economy plunged following multiple rounds of cuts to government services statewide by then-Gov.-elect Jennifer Granholm; however, Mayor Dave Fenton declared an emergency curfew to help manage traffic issues caused by large crowds expected during local high school football games that summer Since then, business activity has rebounded somewhat due to a resurgence in cultural events including art exhibits from local artists throughout October through December; increased tourism from visitors interested in exploring nearby historical sites such as Fort Wayne's Northwest Passage Museum or Wabash National Historical Park near Mount Pleasant; growth potential associated with attractive job opportunities available within Lakeshore International Airport less than two miles away As recently as 2000 Census there were only 2 residents living here full time while over 10% employed elsewhere
Clawson was founded in 1847 by John Clawson and his brother, James. The town was named for John's father,clawson who had died in 1836. Clawsonville was built on the site of the old Clawson house. Clawson had a school from 1848 to 1870, a post office from 1850 to 1860, two churches from 1865 to 1870, and two stores from 1870 to 1880. In 1881 the town incorporated as a village and the first mayor was George W. Sargent. The first store closed in 1886. The population of Clawson increased rapidly around 1900 with new mining settlements being established near the town limits including Big Rapids and Belle Isle Township. This growth led to increasing traffic on the local roads which necessitated construction of more thoroughfares such as Michigan Avenue between Clawsonville and Belle Isle Townshipbeginning in 1903. By 1910 there were six stores in Clawsonville with a population of over 100 people
