Clawson is a small city in the western part of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Clawson is located about 26 miles (39 km) west of Detroit and about 27 miles (41 km) east of Lansing. The community is named after General John A. Clawson, an American general who served in World War I and II and as commander of United States troops in Korea, who was killed in action in 1945. The town began as a farming community on the banks of the Ottawa River near what is now Highway 11 and Township Road 518. In 1871, David Wistar bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land from Abram Salkin for $5 per acre ($40 per ha). By 1890, Wistar had developed a cotton gin, gristmill and other businesses including a grocery store and post office in town center. In 1902–03, Wistar sold his holdings to Jno Pinchot for $10 per acre ($160 per ha). Pinchot founded Mid-America Rubber Company on land he had acquired from David Cushing; this company built two factories that produced tires and rubber products until 1957 when it merged with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to form United States Rubber Corporation (USROC). USROC became one of the largest companies in America by 1990 but failed during the global financial crisis that followed; its assets were sold off in 2009 to Chinese businessman Wang Jianwei for $2 billion. In 1925, Clawson's first high school opened; it continued operation until 1963 when it became Clawson Community High School which remains open today as one of Michigan's leading high schools serving students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Clawson is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 16,827 at the 2000 census. Clawson is the county seat of Washtenaw County and home to the main campus of Wayne State University. It is also the location of the Regional Transit Authority's Clawson Station. The first settlement in Clawson Township was made on November 15, 1819 by John Harker and others from Canada with the hope of finding land for themselves and their families. The township was organized on February 14, 1825 by Order of Territorial Governor Lewis Cass. The first post office in Clawson Township was established on July 1, 1826 by George McMillin. The first store in town was built by Jno. Kappelhoffer and Arent Pahlenberger; it closed in 1830 because of high costs associated with keeping up with Highway 21 traffic through that town. In 1830 John Harker erected a small frame house on what is now Main Street which served as his business until 1840 when he moved to Lockport where he operated a gristmill for many years before dying there in 1849 leaving Behind his extensive farm holdings including an orchard and apple orchard still visible today about one-third mile east of town off US 24 (now I-64). Clawson's growth began quite gradually but steadily over time as various businesses opened up within its limits: a blacksmith shop (1836), bakery (1840), grocery store (1844), post office (1846), saw mill (1848), livery stable(1850–51) and wagon factory(1852). All these businesses were located near what is now Main Street between Elmwood Avenue and M-864/US 24; however most importantly they all were linked together through local transportation systems – trains running into Detroit via Union Terminal then continuing along Woodward Avenue to Clawson where passengers could disembark and continue their journey back home via either horse drawn carriages or later Stephenson streetcars – making this area one large commercial center during its early days. By 1860 there were four churches within five miles of town: two Presbyterian churches and two Methodist Churches; one cotton gin; three stores; six blacksmiths; twelve farmers; twenty-eight residents employed full time within five miles as against just eleven residents employed part time at that point! In 1870 anotherashery opened up just east of downtown which soon became known as "the Elks Hall" due to its prominent location inside what is now Ford Chapel Cemetery while other local businesses continued to grow such as a shoe manufacturer, saddlery, flour mill etc.; however it would be another fifty years before clawson really took off commercially thanks primarily to increasing agricultural production values resulting from increased access to cheap natural resources like coal found near present day Crystal City Boulevard west of town Limits? However even after new industries started coming into play such as paper mills coking coal ovens for steel production during World War II clawSON didn't really experience significant economic development until well after that war when several heavy industry plants started moving intotown from outlying villages/townships like Saginaw Heights due bothto wartime demand for manufacturing components related to military hardware/software products while also offering easier access to raw materials needed for those same products being produced overseas thereby stimulating more overall job creation throughout central Michigan rather than simply becoming another satellite suburb following similar trends seen elsewhere across North America?
