It has been known as Clawson since 1909 when the first school opened in the town center in what is now Clawson Park (). The building that served as the school's first building still stands today and is used as a museum occasionally during summertime. In 1951, clawston mills closed because of competition from other local mills; however they reopened later that year with new equipment and continued operations until 1988 when they went out of business again due to lack of demand for their products among locals and tourists alike despite being listed on the Michigan State Register of Historic Places since 1978

Clawson is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. Clawson was founded in 1827 by John and James Clawson. The town has a population of about 1,600. Clawson is located on the south side of the Kalkaska River, about 20 miles west of Grand Rapids. The first settlers were John and James Clawson who arrived from Scotland in 1827. They began to prospect for land in what is now Clawson, and soon they had established themselves as farmers and traders. In 1830, they married Anna Maria Shively, who came from a prominent family in Battle Creek Township (now part of Kent County). The couple raised six children: four boys and two girls. John Shively died at age 74 years old in 1840; his wife took over management of their farm until her death in 1854. In 1853, Clawson became part of the new township of Kent County after it was organized following a merger between Battle Creek Township and other townships within that county. It remained an agricultural community with few developed businesses until the early 21st century when some growth occurred due to demand for healthcare services near Grand Rapids by residents living near Grace Hospital as well as local manufacturers/ processors who needed access to good quality product from nearby suppliers. There have been several expansions or renovations to our downtown since then including: 1) A new library which opened on October 10th 2009 named after late state legislator Mrs Alice Schroeder-Dunn (1923-2009), one half of the groundbreaking team behind Gratiot's redevelopment project eastward along I-75W into downtown Detroit’s riverfront retail district 2) A new hospital built adjacent to First Christian Church which opened its doors on October 8th 2013 3) A brand new gymnasium completed fall 2014 across from First Christian Church which provides much needed space for physical activity on Main Street while also accommodating overflow crowds during events such as basketball games or wrestling matches
