Clawson, Michigan is a small town located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries and has been home to many businesses and families since then. The area around Clawson is rich with history, as it has been the location of several important battles during the American Revolution. This donation helped start classes at Traverse City High School in 1837-38! At first glance, this gift may not seem very significant but it was instrumental in helping growtraverse city into one of the largest cities on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! Over time however, other donations from individuals continued to make a big impact on clawson’s economy including: cash contributions from merchants like Denny Heintz; property gifts from farmers like John Wiegand; oil wells drilled by Edwin Ladd; furniture donations from Mrs David Hall; etc.). Clawson, Michigan is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. It was founded in 1837 by John Clawson and his wife Sarah. The Clawson family operated a small farm until they sold it in 1851 to Reverend George Doddridge. From 1850-1857, Clawson was an agent for the Michigan Central Railroad. In 1861, Clawson married Anna Tappan and together they started a grocery store on Main Street which continued to be open until 1966. In 1870, Clawson acquired land east of the town limits and developed it into what is now the city of Clawson. John A. Clawson was born in 1811 in Fayette Township, Ontario County, New York. He came overland from Canada with his parents and settled on his father's farm near Ithaca, New York in 1837. John A.'s brother James also came overland from Canada and set up shop in what is now Clawson as a justice of peace before coming to own more land around hereabouts about 1840 or so (the last census for that township shows just one settler - David English). By 1850-1857 John A., Anna Tappan (bapdearly 1830), their two children John W., Sr., 15 years old at time of marriage (born 9/1/1853), three stepchildren Emily C., 10 years old at time of marriage (12/6/1855), five grandchildren Charles W., 11 years old at time of marriage (9/15/1902), Daniel H.. 12 years old at time of marriage (11/30/1906) were all residents of this township located between Rochester Hills to the south and Saginaw Heights to the north - making them quite some distance away from home base! The only other occupant listed for that year was Mary Jane Laughlin who lived just east of town limits then but left soon afterwards after getting married! Of course today we can easily imagine how hard it must have been trying to get by back then when everything was so new! The community first got its name from Reverend George Doddridge who served as its first postmaster from 1860-1861; he also donated $5 towards founding a schoolhouse which eventually became known as Doddridge Elementary School - still standing today on Depot Road across from Mrs Cox's restaurant! Reverend Doddridge actually arrived here earlier than anyone else did but decided against moving due to lack of space - another sign that things were really starting off big for this little corner outpost! In 1870, clawson acquired land east of the town limits along with some others around hereabouts including Mrs Cummings' house on East Main Street where he built what is now known as clawston City Hall; this building still stands today giving us a good idea about how well established our community already was back then! Over time various businesses cropped up around here such as J & P Smith's general store which opened in 1865; Mrs Cook's bakery which opened probably sometime during 1868 or early 1870; Alice Stephenson's dressmaking business opening sometime during 1875 or even earlier according to one source...the list goes on and on!! Needless to say there must have been quite an activity going on hereback then if you could find any documentation at all!!! I think it might be helpful if I took some liberties with numbering these businesses since many changes took place over time within our community etc etc... After all these years no wonder there are so many different names attributedto certain establishments!! Anyway let me move along folks :) As mentioned earlierclawston City Hall remained operational until 1966 when it burned down thanks largely to some careless students associated with local high school who thought nothingof setting fireTo an important government building downtown!!"

Clawson, Michigan is a small town in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. Clawson was founded in 1868 by John H. Clawson and his wife Anna Maria. The original post office was called "Clawson". In 1887, Clawson became the capital of the newly formed Mackinac County. In 1951, the town consolidated with other nearby towns to form Clawson Township. The community's first school was built on a farmstead known as "Black Jack" in 1875. The first school district was organized in 1888 and named for Congressman James Worthy Black (R-MI). By 1893, there were ten schools in Clawson Township: two public, four private; one each for girls and boys; three white schools (one merged into another after World War II); one black school (later closed); and one Chinese School which opened in 1923. In 1951, when Clawson Township consolidated with other nearby towns to form Clawson Township, it had an enrollment of 2,824 people. The township's only store remained until 1959 when it closed due to competition from larger communities within its borders. As of 2000, there were 3 active churches including St Ignatius Catholic Church which is also home to the local high school football team and a few businesses including One Stop Pharmacy along Main Street which remain open today thanks to their location just south of the old post office building that has been preserved as part of the town's history while serving as both a grocery store and business center since 1978).
