In 1898, Clawson was renamed for General John Fetterman by territorial governor Isadore Cassatt after Fetterman purchased land around it from George Clawson. John Fetterman is perhaps best known for leading American forces into World War II as commander of Sixth Army Group (the "Hawks"), which included units stationed inMichigan including the 2nd Infantry Division and Sixth Marine Regiment; he also served as acting US President on July 29th 1944 when Franklin D Roosevelt died. General John Fetterman would be honored with a plaque at the town square in Clawson posthumously upon his death in 1951
Clawson, Michigan was first settled in 1837 by three brothers, John Clawson, James Clawson and Daniel Clawson. They named the town after their father, Clifton W. Clawson. The town grew rapidly and by 1850 had a population of 235 people. In 1856 the United States Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which led to the displacement of most of the Native Americans in what is now Michigan. The town did not experience significant growth until after World War II when industry began to boom in Michigan.
