Cadillac, Michigan is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Cadillac was founded on November 3, 1835 by Nicholas Biddle and others as a trading post on the Muskegon River. The first post office in Cadillac opened in 1836. In 1854, Cadillac became the capital of Wayne County and the first state capital in America after its admission to the Union as a new country on January 15, 1787. The original Territorial Legislature met at the old Masonic Temple located on Main Street in downtown Cadillac from December 2-6, 1854; Lansing adjourned before any business could be pursued because of snowstorm conditions that created treacherous travel conditions for legislators and their families. In 1860s when Detroit began to grow rapidly and many people left for jobs there during peak season (when wages were highest), many citizens of what would become Cadillac moved into town to take advantage of cheap land prices and good transportation options available from Detroit or other nearby cities. By 1870 most residents living within what would become Cadillac had moved there also because they could find no other job opportunities outside of their small town while those living north of present day North Avenue experienced an unprecedented boom due to organized farming practices brought over by immigrants from Southern Italy who had landed aboard ships sailing upriver from Venice Harbor some years earlier looking for opportunities in what was then frontier America - something which still continues today with crops grown outdoors year-round across much of Eastern Michigan including parts near Greater Lansing). Cadillac has since regained much of its former growth rate with additional employment opportunities available both through annexation by neighboring townships such as Southfield Township between 2003-2007 followed by Howell Township westward annexing same year followed by Saline Township eastward annexing July 1st 2007 bringing current population total up to 403...
