Cadillac, Michigan is a small town located in the heart of Midwestern United States. The population was 7,524 at the 2010 census. With its rich history, Cadillac has been an important center for optics since it was founded as a trading post in 1837. Woodward used his new telescopes to survey his land and determine whether or not he should build a fort on it. After consulting with other leaders in the area, Woodward decided that he would build a fort and name it Fort Detroit after his home state of Michigan. The first American telescope manufacturer was Mayer & Lehner which made microscopes and reflectors for astronomical observation during the 1830s-1840s. It wasn't until 1861 that John Herschel created what is considered to be the first true telescope - an 8x50mm reflecting lens called "Herschel's spectrograph". This instrument allowed him to view stars up close for the first time ever! Other notable inventors during this time include Samuel Morse (the inventor of Morse Code) and Benjamin Franklin (the father of our country).
