The first post office in Cadillac was established on December 2, 1837, and received its first mail from Detroit. In 1845 it changed its name to "Cadillac" after General Lafayette's military victory at Monmouth Court House over British forces under Sir George Washington. It was changed back to "Auburn Hills" in 1865 because of objections from other residents who felt that "Auburn Heights" sounded too similar to Toronto Heights near Toronto. The first school in Cadillac opened in 1853 and served grades one through six. The second school opened in 1861 and served grades seven through twelve; it burned down in 1862 while being rebuilt following an arson attack that same year. A third school opened in 1868 which served grades thirteen through fifteen; it also burned down while being rebuilt following an arson attack two years later. A fourth school opened in 1870 which served grades sixteen through twenty-one; it also burned down during construction the next year but was replaced with a new building which still stands today). The fifth school (grades twenty-two through twenty-four) closed due to lack of pupil enrollment around 1903 and reopened as a private academy for girls called Girls Industrial School No 4 (later Girl's High School). From 1901 until 1923 the sixth and current high school operated as vocational high school for boys only with female students serving as both teachers and students from 1912 until 1943 when all male high schools were closed because World War II made such activities wartime munitions plants instead of educational institutions like they had been before then
