Cadillac is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,828 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Cadillac is one of two cities in Wayne County (the other being Southfield) and it also includes the villages of Ahwahnee and Elmhurst. The first Europeans to visit Cadillac were French missionaries on July 3, 1795, who named it Pointe aux Noix because of all the noxious mushrooms growing there. The name was changed to Cadillac on November 1, 1814 when General Mackenzie donated land for a town site in what is now downtown Cadillac. In 1825 Aiken Township was organized within Cadillac limits; this township would become known as Ahwahnee Township during the 1940s when rural residents moved into areas east of I-75 that became part of Ahwahnee Township after they purchased land from the State of Michigan. In 1835 John Sibley built a sawmill on the west side ofriver near present-day ahwatukee Boulevard and riverfront property now occupied by Carpinteria Resort & Casino. This mill operated until 1854 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions. 2 years later settlers began construction on what would become today's Old Mill Building which still stands on Main Street between Third Avenue and River Road west of downtown Cadillac. On October 20th,1856 James Fenton opened his business at Gratiot Avenue and River Road in what is now Pioneer Park southwest corner Third Avenue/River Road just west of Ahwatukee Boulevard
