Burton, Michigan is a small town in the Grand Rapids-Michigan Metropolitan Area. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing-Byford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Burton was Ezekiel Fenton in 1835. He and his family were among the first to move into what would become Burton Township. In 1851, Burton had a population of only 8 people; by 1870, it had grown to 31 people. The township's first school was built in 1868 and served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1925, Burton became one of three townships within Grand Rapids Township (the others being Southfield and Incandescent). The township office moved from its original building on Main Street to its current location on Park Avenue in 1957. The township's name comes from John Burton, an early settler who donated land for a cemetery near his home on North Road. When the cemetery opened in 1892, President Grover Cleveland buried there with many other notable residents including Burrhus Carpenter and James Kappe Sr.. One of Burton's most prominent residents was Judge Augustus Ewing who served as mayor from 1922 until 1928 and as justice of the peace from 1911 until 1924. Other notable figures include local physician Drs Samuel Jaffe and Julius Weingarten; lawyer Harry Sanger; banker Newton Pritchett; educator Miss Anna Waterman; baseball player/coach Lou Gehrig; industrialist George Hutton Sr.; politicians Hiram Bingham Jr., John Dingell Jr., Calvin Coolidge Sr., Franklin D Roosevelt Jr., Joseph McCarthy; journalist Walter Lippmann

However, during World War II it experienced significant damage when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and destroyed much of its infrastructure. The town has seen many changes since then including a move to digital media that began in 2006; however, most notable changes have occurred within its community itself with respect to music venues and nightlife activities. In 2017-2018 alone, there were several local bands that played at various venues throughout the city including The Observatory (an outdoor amphitheater), Northern Lights Live Lounge & Grill (a dance club), and Soulful Sounds (a soul/jazz fusion venue). Additionally there are several bars which offer live music nightly such as The Academy Ballroom or Johnny's Pub which also host DJs each night for an audience of up to 100 people. Despite these choices being made primarily with regards to entertainment value rather than historical significance or importance within Burton’s community fabric, they nonetheless create an interesting snapshot into how different aspects can impact one another over time
