Burton is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Wyoming area of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Captain John Burton in 1824 as a trading post on the Black Hills River. The first post office was established in 1825, and the first store opened in 1827. The town was named after General Jonathan Burton, who won a military victory against Native Americans at Battle of Little Big Horn in 1805. The first school in Burton was built in 1830 and it served students from grades one through twelve until 1921. In 1860, Burton had only two stores and seventy-six residents; but by 1870, there were six stores and 1,000 residents. In 1915, the town had five stores and over 200 residents; but by 1920, all businesses had closed or moved away due to World War I destruction of the local mills. In 1925, Burton became one of thirty-five townships formed within Wayne County when that county was created from part of Calhoun County. The township's initial boundary was much broader than it is today; however, over time it has shrunk to its present boundaries with approximately 2 square miles remaining outside of its present borders (the remainder being located within the current city limits).
