In Burton, Michigan, the town’s history is associated with a number of gun enthusiasts and shooters who have come and gone over the years. The first people to settle in this area were Native American-Indians who hunted game in the region. The first white settler in Burton was James Wilson, who came to the area around 1800. He built a cabin on an island in what is now known as Harbor Park. In 1809, General Anthony Wayne moved his army from Detroit to reach Lake Erie, and while he was there, he decided to explore what lay behind the community of Burton on the north side of that lake. When he got back to Detroit, he recommended that Ohioan Daniel Boone move into what is now downtown Burton so that people could trade goods with him upriver. It wasn’t until 1840 that someone named John Romer bought land east of Harbor Park and started developing it into a settlement called Romerstown. He named his farm Romer Township after his father-in-law, George Roper. The first store opened in Burton in 1844 by Simeon Whitcomb, one of the pioneers who came here during the early days of development hereabouts. By 1865, when Thornton McNaught arrived from Canada with his family and started farming near where Romer Township limits are today (between Belle Isle Boulevard on the east side and State Street on the west), there were already about sixty settlers living hereabouts—all men! Over time more families joined them: There were ninety-four residents when McNaught took possession of his land in 1886; by 1905 there were one hundred sixteen residents living hereabouts! In 1915 Captain Edmund Waddell set up shop at 124 Main St., just northeast of present day Harbor Park Drive; this was also soon followed by Captain Harry Schmidt’s store at 218 Main St., which opened its doors on November 15th 1916 (the date still stands as a commemorative marker for these two businesses). These stores became key points for local buyers and sellers during those early days before delivery service became available through mail order through Sears Roebuck & Co., which opened its doors nearby at 222 Main St. On October 8th 1919 Captain Harry Schmidt sold his business at 218 Main St.—this place has since been renamed “Harry Schmidt”s Store’—to Lillian Weese for $5200 cash! This purchase marked a turning point not only for Harry Schmidt but also for Burton as a whole because it signaled an end to frontier life style hereabouts! For many years thereafter all commerce stopped along Highway 231 southbound just pastCaptain Harry Schmidt’s Store; drivers had no other choice but to take Highway Hylandwy eastbound instead! As you drove down this long straight highway you would see numerous small businesses closed down because they couldn't compete against prices charged by Sears Roebuck & Co., which had become ubiquitous throughout much of America during those earlier decades! That same year saw its biggest event when abolitionist Stephen Douglas appeared before a crowd at local beer hall called The Gilded Cage to demand that Michigan secede from Illinois over moral issues related to slavery。 In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Burton supported both Union forces and Confederate troops against their common enemy (the United States Government) until he finally decided that support for Lincoln would be better aligned with his own personal views than those held by most people within his community (). Burton has been home to the University of Michigan's Burton School of Management since 1906. The first settler in Burton was John Fenton who arrived in 1840 from England. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Burton and named it "Fentonville". In 1845, Edward Swayne immigrated to Burton with his family and founded the Swayzes' grocery store which remains one of the town's most important businesses to this day. Another early resident, George Stephenson, also helped make Burton an important center for trade with the surrounding area. By 1870, there were 10 families living in the town limits; by 1935 there were only six remaining residents within those boundaries In 1907, Detroit Mayor James Coleman jailed then-Detroit Edison Electric Light Company president Samuel Insull for refusing to pay power rates that had increased by 50%. Headlines throughouttown announced Coleman's plan to march on City Hall but when they reached city limits they disbanded because no police could be found to protect them A large fire burned throughout most of downtown Burton on November 5th 1898 starting around 7pm while people were getting dinner at local restaurants It took until 3am before all buildings save one (the old Masonic Temple) had been destroyed including several homes The cause was still unknown many years later
