Burton, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom metropolitan area. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. The name Burton comes from English explorer John Burton who explored what is now southeastern Michigan in 1698-99 on his expedition known as the John Burtons Expedition. The first settler in Burton was George Whetstone, who came to the town in 1827 from Ottawa County, Ohio. A post office called Burton was established in 1830, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened in 1834 by Elisha Laughlin and Alfred Prentice. In 1840, a schoolhouse and clinic were built near what is now downtown Burton; this building still stands today and serves as a community center. In 1847, Augustus Woodward founded Woodward's Furniture Store on State Street east of downtown Burton; this store remains active today and has been visited by many presidents over the years including Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1851, Hetty Mather started a bakery on Main Street west of downtown Burton which continued to operate until 1954 when it became an agricultural cooperative store operated by members of the community until its closure in 1978. In 1865, Milton Sibley established Sibley's Hotel on State Street east of downtown Burton; this hotel still stands today and offers motel rooms as well as Conference Center facilities for events such as conventions or meetings). In 1888, Hiram Morse began importing goods from Canada into Detroit through his company Morse Canning Company; this company later merged with another Canadian company to form Armour Canning Company which served as one of America's leading food manufacturers for many years before being bought by Jardine Matheson Group Limited (now Unilever) in 2002). In 1901-1902 several small businesses were organized into "The Borough" which functioned as an umbrella organization for all their individual businesses within the boundaries of Barton Township: these businesses included hardware stores (Fishers Hardware Company), tailors (Thornhill Tailor Shop), photographers (Everett Photography Company), printers (Folsom Printing & Binding Co.), etc.; all except Everett PhotographyCompany eventually closed down or moved away during prohibition when operating alcohol was banned across most states due to public health concerns about drunk drivers etc.). At that time there were only four populate blocks within Barton Township - Elmwood Park - City Hall/Gymnasium - Snyder Avenue - each block consisting of six buildings totaling 198 feet long by 58 feet wide with a street frontage measuring 40 feet wide between each building.. On November 17th 1921 local resident Harry Smith set up a hand pump used for extracting water from wells located around town cornering Elmwood Park Road & State Street East where he named it "Harry's Well". That same year local resident Harry Smith donated land northeast cornering Elmwood Park Rd & State St., south side lot #1 to Burr township for use as village square

Burton is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It is located on the Kalkaska River, about 30 miles southwest of Flint and 25 miles northwest of Lansing. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Burton were two brothers, Peter and Edward Burton, who came to the area in 1834. They built a cabin on an island in the river. In 1840, they married Mary Ann Ladd and settled down on their farm around what is now Center Street. The first school was opened in Burton by Mrs. Maud Cooksey in 1847. The first post office was established here in 1853; it was renamed Burton after John Burton, one of the original settlers. A sawmill and grist mill were built here between 1865 and 1870; these mills were destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1899, Burton became part of Lansing Township when it was created from parts of three other townships: East Lansing (later Auburn), West Bloomfield (later Genesee), and Northville (later Oakland). In 1909, Barton High School opened as a new high school for boys; it closed during World War II because of limited enrollment due to rationingof materials needed for war production. It reopened as Barton Junior-Senior High School after the war ended. In 1951, Burton's only store closed due to competition from larger stores east of town.; however, this did not prevent its economy from growing rapidly over the following years which led to development around the store including a new building that replaced the original store building on Center Street in 1959-60 containing a grocery store as well as several apartments above it which housed various types of businesses such as clothing stores., real estate firms., etc.; Finally with its annexation by Flint Township (. . .) this resulted in increased growth for both townships resulting in today's current day boundaries for both townships with approximately 100% combined population within their limits making them among Michigan's most densely populated communities
Burton, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 8,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Macomb County seat. The early history of Burton includes its origins as a small Indian village known as Tekoniagah (Wine Village). In 1827, a group of settlers from Illinois arrived in what is now Burton and founded the first permanent settler's cabin on an earthwork mound near Lake Superior. The new arrivals were Methodists and brought with them their own churches and schools. In 1829, Captain John Smith discovered land grant number 7 on which Burton would be built. For many years it was thought that this grant originated with General George Washington because he had been one of the military leaders who helpedraham Fort Dearborn became an important trading post on Superior River. After more than two centuries of confusion, it was finally determined that General Wayne had awarded the land to Captain Smith for his role in helping to build Fort Dearborn. When Detroit was founded in 1803, some initial settlement occurred at what is now downtown Detroit but most activity took place along the river where traders licensed by Britain traded goods with Native Americans such as the Potawatomi and Ojibwe. This trade led to several treaties being signed between Great Britain and various Native American groups including those living along the lower Michigan River watershed including those living near present-day Burton. In 1797, when France acquired control over New France, they began opening up tortured resources such as coal and copper mines throughout what are today Ontario and Quebec provinces; however these mineral discoveries did not lead to large-scale settlements until after 1800 when fur traders began looking for new markets for their products outside North America due to competition from English merchants interested in acquiring access to new routes through Central America via Mexico City’s Texcoco port
